ঘনাদাকে ভোট দিন
ঘনাদা এলেন
বাহাত্তর নম্বর বনমালি নস্কর লেনের সেই বহু আলোচিত মেসের আদি বাসিন্দা চারজন। শিবু গৌর সুধীর শিশির। ঘনাদা তেতলায় ন্যাড়া ছাদে ঘর দেখে দুদিনের থাকার বাসনায় ঢুকে পড়েন। কয়েক মিনিটের মধ্যেই তার মোক্ষম সংলাপ। “জারবোয়া জবাবের জন্য অপেক্ষা”। ব্যাস তারপরেই হু হু করে চড়ল চারজনের সম্মিলিত কৌতূহলের পারদ। সাহারার মরু অঞ্চলের এক রকম ইঁদুরের গল্পে – আফ্রিকার উগাণ্ডার অভয়ারণ্যের রহস্যঘন গল্পে – রীতিমতো তাক লাগিয়ে দিলেন। টাইকুন ট্যানার চমকানো আফ্রিকান সফরির ঝামেলা পোহানোতেই নাকি এই শুকনো লম্বা চেহারার লোকটার যাবতীয় সুখ।
সিগারেট খান। অথচ সিগারেট সঙ্গে রাখেন না। অম্লান বদনে তাই সিগারেট তুলে নেওয়া শুরু শিশিরের টিন থেকে। মুখে অবশ্য বলেন যে এগুলো সব ধার নিচ্ছেন। গুণে গুণে সব কটা সিগারেট তিনি পরে ফেরত দিয়ে দেবেন। সিগারেটে সুখটান দিতে দিতে আফ্রিকার গহন অরণ্যের বিবরণে যা সব ইতিহাস ভূগোল জীববিদ্যা উঠে আসে তাতে স্পষ্ট তাঁর প্রবল পাণ্ডিত্য, অকুতোভয় সংগ্রামী চেতনা, উপস্থিত বুদ্ধির প্রাখর্য, যেকোন বিপজ্জনক পরিস্থিতিতেও সমস্ত স্নায়ু সজাগ রেখে বীর দর্পে জয়ী হবার উদগ্র বাসনা। বলাবাহুল্য চারজনেরই মন্ত্রমুগ্ধ মোহাবেশ তৈরিতে এতটুকুও দেরী হয় না।
এ হেন ঘনাদা নাকি লন্ডনটাইমসএ জারবোয়ার ছাপ দেওয়া একটা বিজ্ঞাপনের উত্তর পাবার আশাতেই কলকাতায় এই বাহাত্তর নম্বরে অবস্থান করছেন। এই ঠিকানায় উত্তরটা উড়ে এলেই তিনি আবার বেরিয়ে পড়বেন গোটা বিশ্বের রহস্যময়তার আহ্ববানে। বাকীটা ইতিহাস।
পোকা
বাপরে বাপ! কী সাংঘাতিক কান্ড! ঘনাদার মতো অমিত পরাক্রমী বীরের কিনা সামান্য নারকুলে পোকা দেখে এমন ভয়! চেয়ার টেবিল উল্টে পড়ি কি মরি করে সিঁড়ি বেয়ে এমন দুদ্দাড় গতিতে ছুটে আসা ?
উঁহু। ঘনাদা অতো সহজে হারবার পাত্র ? শুরু হলো তাঁর সেই স্বভাবসিদ্ধ ভঙ্গীতে ব্যাখ্যান। পোকা ব্যাখ্যান। সিস্টোসার্কা গ্রিগেরিয়ার গল্প। ঘনাদা যখন লাটাভিয়ার রাজধানী রিগা থেকে আফ্রিকার বিভিন্ন অংশ ঘুরে বেড়িয়ে ছিলেন একটা পোকার জন্য তার গল্প।
দুই ইহুদি ভাই ভরনফ ও জ্যাকব রথস্টাইন কিভাবে ছাড়াছাড়ি হয়ে যায় তার বিবরণ। পরিস্থিতির চাপে ভরনফ খাঁটি প্রুশিয়ান হয়ে যেতে বাধ্য হয়। এই জেনারেল ভরনফের সাথে ঘনাদার বন্ধুত্ব শিকারকে কেন্দ্র করে। কখনো নাইপার নদীতে – কখনো কঙ্গোর জঙ্গলে – কখনো মাসাইদের সঙ্গে। ভরনফের গোঁড়া ইহুদি ভাই জ্যাকব রথস্টাইনের অনড় জাতিপ্রেম। ইহুদি বিদ্বেষের চরম অত্যাচারে লাঞ্ছনায় নির্যাতীত জ্যাকব রথস্টাইন প্রতিশোধ নিতে দৃঢ় প্রতিজ্ঞ। আফ্রিকার গহন জঙ্গলে সি সি মাছ আবিষ্কারের ভান করে বছরের পর বছর তার পরিকল্পনা কীভাবে ঝাঁক ঝাঁক পোকা বাহিনী দিয়ে সে আঘাত হানবে সভ্যতায়।
কিন্তু আমাদের একমেবাদ্বিতীয়ম ঘনাদা – গোটা আফ্রিকা ঘুরে বার এল আরব নদীর ধারে বিশ্বের উচ্চতম মানুষ ডিঙ্কাদের দেশে সাত ফুটিয়া এক মাঝি আর একটি ছোট ডিঙি নিয়ে পারবেন কি ঐ খাঁটি ইহুদি ভাই জ্যাকব রথস্টাইনের মানবঘাতী পরিকল্পনাকে – মহাপ্রলয়কে থামাতে ?
ভেলা
“অবিশ্বাস্য” শব্দটার সাথে ঘনাদার তো গাঁটছড়ার সম্পর্ক। তাই চমকাবার তেমন কিছুই নেই। কিন্তু তাই বলে ঘনাদার হাতে কিনা কুড়ি টাকার নোট! শুধু তাই নয়। ঘনাদা কিনা কুড়ি টাকা দিয়ে রামভূজকে বিরিয়ানি, চিংড়ির মালাইকারি আনতে দিচ্ছেন! পেস্তা দেওয়া সেমুই পায়েসের ব্যবস্থা করতে বলছেন! না, এখানেই শেষ নয়। অন্য পকেট থেকে ঘনাদা কিনা বার করছেন সিগারেটের নতুন টিন!
এই দিলদরিয়া শাহানশাপনার কারণটিও ততোধিক অবিশ্বাস্য। উর্তাদো কার্লসের চিঠি এসেছে। ব্রাজিলের কারেন্সি ভাঙাবার অসুবিধা বলেই ভারতীয় মুদ্রায় বদল করে সেই টাকা এসে পৌঁছেছে। মনে হতে পারে যে সামান্য পঞ্চাশ টাকা পাঠিয়েছে কিনা এত ঝামেলা করে ? কিন্তু না। উর্তাদোর মতো হাড়কঞ্জুস পঞ্চাশ টাকা বের করেছে তাই যথেষ্ট।
স্বাভাবিক ভাবেই এসে গেল উর্তাদোকে নিয়ে ঝড়ের রাতে দক্ষিণ আটলান্টিকের অকূল সমুদ্রে একটা ওলটানো ভেলা ধরে ভেসে থাকার রুদ্ধশ্বাস কাহিনী। মাথার টুপি থেকে একটা বড়ি বের করে উর্তাদোর মুখে দিয়ে তাকে বাঁচানোর মরিয়া চেষ্টা। ব্রেজিলের কাবেদেলা বন্দর থেকে পঞ্চাশ মাইল দূরের একটি ছোট দ্বীপের নিলাম ডাকাকে কেন্দ্র করে ঘনাদার এই চরম বিপদের মুখোমুখি হওয়া। এই নিলামকে কেন্দ্র করেই উর্তাদোর জ্ঞাতিভাই দে দিয়সের সাথে সংঘাত। সে সংঘাতে যে ঘনাদা জিতবেনই তা তো স্বাভাবিক ব্যাপার। শুধু এই সামুদ্রিক অভিযানকে তিনি কিনা গৌরবগাথায় পরিণত করলেন সামান্য একটা ভেলার সাহায্যে! নাহ, এ অবিশ্বাস্য জয় ঘনাদার পক্ষেই সম্ভব।
ঢিল
সর্বনাশ! তুচ্ছ ভাঙা কাচের ঢেলা ভেবে ঘনাদার টেবিলের পেপারওয়েটটা কোথায় ফেলে দিয়েছে বনোয়ারি। ঘনাদার ঘরের কোন জিনিস তুচ্ছ ? কোন না কোন সাংঘাতিক তাৎপর্য তো থাকবেই। কে বোঝাবে মূর্খ বনোয়ারিকে !
সেকেন্দার শাহ এশিয়া জয়ের পথে হ্যালিকারনেশাস ধ্বংস করে লুঠতরাজ চালান। সেখানেই পরে গড়ে ওঠে পেট্রোনিয়াম শহর। সেটারই অপভ্রংশ তুরস্কের দক্ষিণ পশ্চিম কোণের বন্দর এই বোদরুম। ঘনাদার তখন স্পঞ্জের ব্যবসা। বোদরুম আর ক্রাবাকলা দ্বীপের মাঝে চুকা প্রণালী থেকে কুমালি অন্তরীপ ঘুরে সিমি দ্বীপ পর্যন্ত ঘনাদার ত্রেচান্দিরি নৌকায় তুমুল ঘোরাঘুরি দুষ্প্রাপ্য স্পঞ্জ ইউস্পঞ্জিয়া অফিসিনালিস মলিসিমার খোঁজে। ডাক নাম তুর্কিপেয়ালা। তাই জলফুসফুস আর হাওয়ার থলি পিঠে ফ্লিপার পায়ে সমুদ্রের নীচে চরে বেড়ানো।
সঙ্গী কাপকিন খুড়োর তুর্কিপেয়ালাই নয়, মারমারিস উপসাগরে ডুবে যাওয়া জাহাজের বিভিন্ন দামী সামগ্রী তোলার দিকেই নজর। তারা এভাবেই ডুবে যাওয়া জাহাজের জায়গাটার কাছে পৌঁছে যায়। রাত জাগা অভিযান। ঘুমিয়ে পড়েছিল ঘনাদা। একটা আলোর রেখা দেখে ধাক্কাধাক্কি। সামনেই স্যাভেজ সাহেবের জাহাজ।
প্রথম চোটেই স্যাভেজের খুনে সহকারী কাশিমের মোকাবিলা। বলাই বাহুল্য কাশিমকে ধরাশায়ী করতে বেগ পেতে হল না ঘনাদাকে। টেবিলে ছিল টেকটাইটের সেই পেপারওয়েটটা। ঘনাদা সেটাই নিয়ে চলে এলেন। ডোবা জাহাজ থেকে পাওয়া আলাবাস্টারের মূর্তি স্যাভেজ ফেরত দিলেই ওটা ফেরত হবে। গল্পের মধ্যেই বনোয়ারী রাস্তা থেকে উদ্ধার করেছে সেই স্মৃতিবিজড়িত টেকটাইট। হারানো ধন ফিরে পেয়েও ঘনাদা খুশি বলে মনে হলো না।
মাছি
ঘনাদার ব্যাপার স্যাপার বোঝা খুবই মুশকিল। মাছিদের উৎপাত যতই হোক – মাছিদের তাড়ানো যাবে না – মারাও যাবে না । মাছির প্রতি নাকি কৃতজ্ঞতা ! তো কৃতজ্ঞতার কার্যকারণ জানতেই হয় । তাই শুরু হলো মাছিদের প্রতি কৃতজ্ঞতার অন্তর্কাহিনি ।
সুদানের পুরনো খ্রিষ্টান মঠের ধ্বংসাবশেষ দেখতে গিয়ে ডক্টর লার্বো আর লুইগি ক্যাপেলার সাথে দেখা । ডক্টর লার্বোর পুঁথি কেনার বাতিক । তবু একটা বিশেষ পুঁথি কিনতে তাকে নিষেধ করলেন ঘনাদা । যে কোন জিনিসের আসল নকল বোঝার ক্ষমতা তো ঘনাদার নখদর্পণে । সে পুঁথি বা পাথর যাই হোক। ইবন জুবেরের নকল পুঁথি ঘনাদা কিনতে দেবেন কেন ? তখন জানা গেল এক বছরের অদ্ভূত চুক্তির কথা । ঠিক এক বছরের মধ্যে গোপন গুহাগহ্বর থেকে নিয়ে আসতে হবে যা কিছু আনার ।
সময় গড়ায় । মান্দারা পাহাড়ের কোলে প্লেন থেকে নামার পথেই ক্যাপেলার স্বরূপ প্রকাশ পেতে থাকে । রেই-রৌবা পাহাড়ে যাওয়ার আগে তো আরো পরিস্কার । পুঁথি নয়, ক্যাপেলার লক্ষ্য ইস্পাতের তৈরি গোপন ঘর যেখানে লুকোনো রয়েছে অতুল ঐশ্বর্য। তার চাবি ক্যাপেলা ডক্টর লার্বোর উপর দৈহিক শক্তি প্রয়োগ করে আদায় করেছে ক্যাপেলা ।
ঘনাদা উদ্ধার করলেন হাতপা বাঁধা ডক্টর লার্বোকে । চুক্তিসময় অতিক্রান্ত । বেড়ে যাওয়া ৩৫ সেকেণ্ডের জটিল হিসাব । কিন্তু সব সমস্যার পরিত্রাতা যে ঘনশ্যাম দাস । সিফেনোমিয়া মাছির গতি ঘন্টায় ৮১৭ মাইল । টমটমের ধ্বনিসংকেতে কাজ হাসিল । আসলে সেই অতি পরিচিত প্রবাদবাক্য – অসম্ভব বলে কোন শব্দ ঘনাদার অভিধানে নেই ।
গান
বড়ো কৌতূহল উদ্দীপক ঝামেলা। বাহাত্তর নম্বর নস্কর পাড়া লেনের বাসিন্দাদের ঘোর সমস্যা। নানান ভয়ঙ্কর ভয় মাখা কার্ড এসে পৌঁছচ্ছে নানা ভাবে। বিপদগামী মানুষের বিপজ্জনক সময়ের এলোপাথাড়ি মার খাওয়া নিয়ে ঘনাদা নিজেও যখন উদবিগ্ন – তখন বাকিদের মুখে হাসি ফুটল। ওষুধে কাজ ধরেছে। আসলে ঘনাদাকে কিছুতেই যে বাহাত্তর নম্বর থেকে সাময়িক দূরে রাখা যাচ্ছিল না। কিন্তু সংস্কার তো করতেই হবে। তাই এই কৃত্রিম ভয়ের বাতাবরণ তৈরি করা। অবশেষে রাজি ঘনাদা। ডায়মন্ডহারবারে কদিনের জন্যে হাওয়াবদল পরিকল্পনা।
ঈশ্বর বলে যদি কোথাও কেউ থেকে থাকেন তো তিনি এই সব কাণ্ডকারখানা দেখে নিশ্চয়ই বেশ হেসেছেন কদিন। কিন্তু দিনের দিনে ঘনাদা ঠিক একটা ঘটনা ঘটালেন। প্রত্যাশিতই ব্যাপারটা। দুম করে চিরাচরিত মন্তব্য- “গানটা দিয়ে দিলাম”। বোঝো কাণ্ড। গান!! হচ্ছে হাওয়াবদলের কথা। তার মধ্যে গান!! গান দিলেন মাৎসুয়োকে। মাতসুয়ো কে ? স্বাভাবিক প্রশ্ন ? কিন্তু ঘনাদার উত্তর যে স্বাভাবিক পথে হাঁটবে না এ তো বলাই বাহুল্য। প্রশান্ত দ্বীপপুঞ্জের মাঝামাঝি টোঙ্গা দ্বীপপুঞ্জের উত্তরে লিমু আর নিফা দ্বীপের কাহিনী এসে পড়ল। ব্যাঙেদের গান আর সেই সব গানেদের থামানোর অত্যন্ত বিচক্ষণ ঘনাদাসুলভ কর্মকুশলতা। সব শেষে সংযোজন – আমেরিকাতেও নাকি শুরু এই কোলাব্যাঙের ভয়ঙ্কর উৎপাত। ঘনাদা যদি সহজে গান না দেন তাই আমেরিকা থেকে এভাবে ভয়ের পরিবেশ তৈরি করে ঘনাদাবাহিনীকে একটু ভড়কে দেওয়া।
এরপরে আর ডায়মণ্ডহারবারে হাওয়াবদলের জন্য রাজী করানো যায় ঘনাদাকে ?
মাপ
মহা মুশকিল। ঘনাদা তার মেসের ঘরে আরও একটা জানালা তৈরী করতে চান। কিন্তু মালিক রাজী হবে কেন ? তাছাড়া দক্ষিণ দিকে অতটা জায়গাও নেই। বাড়তি জানালার কারণ হিসাবে ঘনাদা দাখিল করেছেন, বেশ কিছু নিত্য প্রয়োজনীয় জিনিস হারানোর হিসাব। দুদিন ধরে সেই সব জিনিসপত্র সংগ্রহ করতে গিয়েও ব্যর্থ। সব মাপ মতো কেনা বা জোগাড় করা কি চাট্টিখানি কথা!
তবে আমরা যারা অসম্ভব গুণগ্রাহী ঘনাদার হাল ছাড়ব কেন ? সব কিছু মাপে না মিললে কি হবে – নানান ব্যাখ্যায় আমাদের প্রমাণ করার মোক্ষম চেষ্টা যে আগেরটা যাই হোক , এই নতুন সংগৃহীত জিনিসটি আগের চাইতেও ভালো। কিন্তু ঘনাদার মেজাজ আজ যেন বড্ডো তিরিক্ষে। এমনকি খাওয়াদাওয়ার লোভনীয় টোপেও ঘনাদাকে আজ কায়দা করা যাচ্ছে না! বেশি গোল বাধল সামান্য একটা কান খুশকি নিয়ে। কানের খুশকি নিয়ে উপরচালাকির ঢঙে গৌর ফোড়ন কেটেছে – আট দশমিক ঊন আশি।
কিন্তু ইনি যে সেই আদি অকৃত্রিম বিস্ময়মানব ঘনশ্যাম। কান থেকে খুশকির স্পর্শসুখ নিতে নিতে মন্তব্য –এটা নাকি তিয়াত্তর ঢেউ বেশি। ব্যাস। এরপর আমাদের গল্প শোনার উন্মুখ কৌতূহল আর ঘনাদার গল্প শোনাবার উদগ্র বাসনার তুমুল লড়াই। প্যারিসের কাছে রাখা দুজায়গায় লাইন কাটা প্ল্যাটিনাম ইরিডিয়ামের বার নয়, দুর্লভ গ্যাস ক্রিপটন – ৮৬ র গল্প। আর তাতেই ঘনাদার কেল্লা ফতে।
লাট্টু
ঘনাদা প্লেনে চড়তে আর রাজী নয়। কারণ ? ওই যে লাট্টু। ইংল্যান্ড থেকে আমেরিকা যাওয়ার সময় ড্যাকোটা বিমানের আশ্চর্যজনক অন্তর্ধান। কানাডার পূর্বদিকে সমুদ্রের ধারে নোভা স্কোসিয়া। লিভারপুলে নামার কথা। কিন্তু লিভারপুল ও হ্যালিফ্যাক্স দু জায়গার এরোড্রোমের র্যাডারস্ক্রিন আশ্চর্যজনক ভাবে নীরব। গুপ্তচর গ্যালিকোও নিরুদ্দেশ।
ভাগ্যক্রমে ঘনাদা তখন ইংল্যান্ডে। ক্রয়ডনের পুলিশকর্তা মিস্টার ডোনাটের বাড়িতে অতিথি। তাই রহস্য মোচনের দায়িত্ব ঘনাদার ঘাড়েই পড়বে – এটাই তো স্বাভাবিক। সুপারসোনিক জেটবম্বারে উড়ে যেতে যেতে ডোনাটের কাছ থেকে ঘনাদা জানলেন গুপ্তচর গ্যালিকোর সব বৃত্তান্ত। তাই নিউইয়র্ক থেকে ল্যাব্রাডারে যেতে উৎসাহী ঘনাদা।
ল্যাব্রাডারের ব্যাটল হারবারে নেমে মোটর বোট ভাড়া করে হ্যামিলটন নদী দিয়ে তারা চললেন ডাইক লেকের দিকে। সেখানে লবস্টিক হ্রদের কাছেই হ্যামিলটন জলপ্রপাত। ডাইক লেকের উত্তরে নেমে পাঁচ দিনের দীর্ঘ হাঁটা পথ। সেখানে সন্ধান মিলল ছদ্মবেশী গ্যালিকোর। সে তুলে দিলো হারানো সামরিক ফাইল। জানাল বিমানেরা কোন আকর্ষণে একের পর এক নেমে আসতে বাধ্য হয় ভেঙেচুরে তছনচ হয়ে। পাওয়া গেল ডাইক হ্রদে ভাসমান লাট্টুর মতো চাকতি। যার অমোঘ আকর্ষণেই নেমে আসে সব বিমান। সেই চাকতির মধ্যে ঘনাদার নেতৃত্বে ডোনাট আর গ্যালিকো অতিকষ্টে ঢুকে পড়ল। প্রচুর যন্ত্রপাতি আর নানান বোতাম। ঘনাদা এলোপাথাড়ি সেগুলো টিপতেই আকাশের দিকে ছুটে যেতে লাগল লাট্টুযান। আকাশে তখন আরো কয়েকটা চাকতি যান ঘিরে ফেলেছে। তাদের সাথে রীতিমতো টক্কর। এক সময়ে সমুদ্রে নেমে আসা। জ্ঞান হারানো। লাট্টুতে এমন ভ্রমণের পর আর প্লেন চড়তে ভালো লাগে ঘনাদার ?
সুতো
ইনিসিওর করা রেজেস্ট্রি চিঠি ঘনাদার নামে আসবে না তো কি পাড়ার ভুতোর নামে আসবে? কী ছিল সেই চিঠিতে? ছিল কটা রঙিন সুতো। গাঁটপড়া রঙিন সাধারণ সুতো।
পৃথিবীর সবচেয়ে রহস্যময় ঠ্যাঙ্গাড়ে জাতি শাভান্তের সন্ধানে ব্রেজিলের মাত্তোগসসোর জঙ্গল দিয়ে চলেছেন ঘনাদারা। শাভান্তেদের মোটা মোটা লাঠি দিয়ে মানুষ মারতেই আনন্দ। ভয়ংকর জানোয়ারদের থেকেও দ্রুত তাদের নিঃশব্দ গতি। দুবছর আগে পর্যটক সেনর বেরিয়েন এখানে নিরুদ্দেশ হয়ে যান। তাকে খুঁজতে গিয়ে আর ফেরেন নি ডন বেনিটো নামে এক শিকারিও। ঘনাদারা জঙ্গলের মধ্যে তাঁবু ফেলেছেন। নানান পাখপাখালি আর হাড় হিম করা বন্য প্রাণীর ডাক। এসব শাভান্তেদের চাতুরি। শত্রু খতমের রণণীতি। কিন্তু ঘনাদার মগজাস্ত্রর সাথে পারবে কেন? পালটা ডাক শুরু করল সর্ববিদ্যা বিশারদ ঘনাদা। সেই ডাক অনুসরণ করে মিলল একটা তাঁবু। ভেতরের লোকটাকে ঘনাদার নিজস্ব স্টাইলে বাইরে এনে চুপিসাড়ে ঢুকে ঘনাদার ততক্ষণে যা দেখার যা জানার যা নেওয়ার সব সম্পন্ন। নিশ্চিত হয়ে নিলেন ইনিই বেনিটো। আগেই ঘনাদা সব বলে গেলেন। দেখিয়ে দিলেন হাতের মুঠো খুলে সেই রঙিন সুতো – সাড়ে চারশো বছর আগের পেরুর ইংকা সভ্যতার কিপু। শক্তিতে কেড়ে নিতে চেয়েছিলো সম্পদলোভী বেনিটো। তাকে ঘায়েল করতে হলো। তবু মায়া। বছরের পর বছর লোকটা এই জঙ্গলে পড়ে কিপুর মানে উদ্ধারের জন্যে। দু বছর সময় দিলেন ঘনাদা।
দু বছর অতিক্রান্ত। ব্যর্থ বেনিটোই সেই কিপু বা রঙ্গিন সুতো পাঠিয়েছে রেজেস্ট্রি ডাকে।
দাঁত
অমন তাবড় বীর ঘনাদার কিনা বাঁধানো দাঁত ? ধরা পড়েও অপ্রস্তুত হওয়া তো ধাতে নেই। তাই বাঁধানো দাঁত দিয়ে কী ঐতিহাসিক কাণ্ডটাই না ঘটিয়েছিলটা, তা বোঝাতেই মাছ ধরা নিয়ে জ্ঞানের ঝাঁপি খুলে ছিলেন ঘনাদা। বলছিলেন নীলিমার কথা। না না, মেয়ে নয়। মাছ। সাত হাত বিশমনি পেল্লায় টুনি। ক্যালিফোর্নিয়ার অ্যাভালন শহরে টুনা ক্লাব বিপদে। টুনি বিপজ্জনক ভাবে টোপ না গিলে জলকন্যার মতো কোন কায়দায় সুতো কেটে বেরিয়ে যায়। মাছশিকারীরা খুব বেকায়দায়।
টুনি মাছ শিকার করতে যাওয়া ডে-কস্টার নিখোঁজ। তাই অ্যাভালন শহরে তার খোঁজে ঘনাদা। কিন্তু ভাগ্য বড়ো করুণ। দেখল এসেছে ডে-কস্টার মৃতদেহ। সেই ঘনীভূত রহস্য উদ্ধারে ঘনাদাও নীলিমা শিকারে নিবেদিতপ্রান। কিন্তু বারংবার নীলিমা অবিশ্বাস্য ভাবে সুতো কেটে পালায়। রোখ চেপে যায় ঘনাদার। ক্যালিফোর্নিয়ার নিউ পোর্ট শহরে ধনী সভ্য বেনিটোর নিমন্ত্রনে ঘনাদাকে যেতে হল তার জাহাজপার্টিতে। সেখানেই জানা গেল ডেকস্টার মৃত্যুরহস্য।
উদ্ধত বেনিটো দৈহিক শক্তিতে টেক্কা দিতে চেয়েছিলো। কিন্তু ঘনাদার কাছে সে পারবে কেন ? উদ্ধার হলো বৈজ্ঞানিক এন্টনি ফিশার। যাকে দিয়ে দূর থেকে চালানো অস্ত্র তৈরী থেকে কোবাল্ট বোমা তৈরির অংক সবই লেখানো হয়েছে। টরপেডোর মতো জলে ডোবা অস্ত্র দিয়ে টুনিশিকারীদের ছিপের সুতো কেটে নীলিমাকে অজেয় করার প্রমাণ লুকিয়ে ছবি তুলে ঘনাদা পাঠিয়ে দিয়েছেন নিউপোর্টের সমুদ্র উপকূলে। ক্যামেরা ? লুকোনো ছিলো ঘনাদার বাঁধানো দাঁতে।
জল
ঘনাদার গল্প বলার ইচ্ছে কখন কিভাবে আসে বোঝা খুব মুশকিল। খেলার মাঠে বর্ষাতি হারিয়ে গৌর এবং আমরা বেশ বিরক্তিতে। অযাচিত ভাবেই ঘনাদা গল্প বলায় মশগুল। জোহান্নেসবার্গের এক কাগজে এক অদ্ভূত অপমানজনক বিজ্ঞাপন। “সাতদিন জল না খেলেও মরে না এমন সুঁটকো চিমসে কালা নফর চাই”। এটা দেখে পোশাক আর চেহারা এরকমই খোলতাই করে ঘনাদা এলফ স্ট্রিটের পাশের গলিতে এক তামাক কোম্পানির অফিসে হাজির। অভিনয়ের চোটে ফিংক সাহেবের মনে ধরে গেল ছদ্মবেশী ঘনাদাকে।
তারপর কালাহারি মরুর ভেতর দিয়ে কুরুমান নদীর শুকনো খাত দিয়ে উইতদ্রায়াইএ আসল মরুতে ওঠা। সেখান থেকে কীটমানসুফে পৌঁছাতে হবে। আনতে হবে দুষ্প্রাপ্য দুটো কারকুল ভেড়ার ছানা। অতি গোপনে – চুরি করে। ৫ দিনের হাঁটা মরু পথে কোথাও জল পাওয়া যাবে না। এই অত্যন্ত কঠিন কাজটাও সারতে ঘনাদার মতো অনন্য প্রতিভার কোন অসুবিধা হতে পারে ? দিন দশেকের মধ্যেই কাজ হাসিল। শয়তান ফিংক ঘনাদাকে জল সঙ্গে নিতে না দিলে কিহবে – ওই অঞ্চলের লুকোনো ঝরণা আর বুনো তরমুজের খবর সর্বজ্ঞানী ঘনাদার অজানা হতে পারে ?
রূঢ় অমানবিক শয়তান ফিংককে এবারে উচিৎ শিক্ষা দেওয়ার পালা। ফিংকের জন্য ওই কালাহারিতে জলের ব্যবস্থাকে ঘনাদা দিলেন সাবাড় করে। জোহান্নেসবার্গের অফিসে একটা চড় মেরে ছিলেন ফিংক। এবারে দুটো চড় ফেরত দিতে চান ঘনাদা। ফেরত দিয়েছিলেন একটু বেশিই হাত পা বেঁধে ওই নির্জন কালাহারিতে ফেলে রেখে।
কাঁটা
ঘনাদা বাসা খুঁজছেন! কিন্তু তার গল্প তো মন দিয়েই শোনা হয়। অবিশ্বাসকে চাপা দেওয়াও হয় মুগ্ধতার ভঙ্গিতে। তবু এখন রোজ পেপারে বাড়িভাড়া সংক্রান্ত বিজ্ঞাপনের পাতায় তিনি লাল পেন্সিলে দাগ দিচ্ছেন! ওঁর সেবার তো কোন ত্রুটি হচ্ছে না। টিফিন কেরিয়ার ভর্তি রকমারি লোভনীয় খাবার আসছে রোজ ঘনাদার জন্যই। আসলে কাঁটার ভয়ে ঘনাদার পাতে বেলেমাছ – এই অপমানজনক অপবাদ ঘনাদা মন থেকে মেনে নিতে পারেন নি। তাই এই বাড়ি খোঁজার তাড়াহুড়ো।
ঘনাদা আর এই মেসের বাড়িতে থাকবেন না। বেশ। অন্যরাও প্ল্যানে কমতি কিসের ? তারাও কাগজে বাড়ি ভাড়ার বিজ্ঞাপনে সবুজ কালিতে দাগাতে শুরু করল। শুধু কি তাই ? হঠাৎ একদিন সকাল থেকে চারমূর্তি নিরুদ্দেশ। রামভুজ মারফৎ ঘনাদার কানে খবর গেল – এই চার বাবুও নাকি মেস ছেড়ে অন্য বাড়ি চলে যাবে। তাই ঘর খুঁজতে বেরিয়েছে। ঘনাদা ঘাবড়াবেন কি! পালটা চালে এবারে একটা মারাত্মক টেলিগ্রাম। গোটা প্রশান্ত মহাসাগরের মুরুব্বি কর্তাদের ধমকে এই টেলিগ্রাম।
ওষুধে কাজ জব্বর। আবার সবাই টঙের ঘরে। মধুরতর সমাবর্তন। টেলিগ্রামের ব্যাখ্যা হিসাবে কাঁটা গল্পের জম্পেশ উপক্রমণিকা। একেবারে সেই আগের চেনা মেজাজ। ক্যারোলাইন দ্বীপপুঞ্জের ইফালিক নামক অ্যাটল এ ওঠার বিবরণ। স্কুবা ডাইভিঙ এ মেছো ফ্লিপার আর পিঠে অক্সিজেন সিলিণ্ডার নিয়ে প্রবালদ্বীপের সৌন্দর্য রহস্য উন্মোচনের কথা। সেখানেই পাওয়া গেল অ্যাকান্থ্যাস্টার প্লানচিটা বা কাঁটার মুকুটের রোমহর্ষক কাহিনী। এমন সব গল্প শোনার সৌভাগ্যের মধ্যে আর কখনো ঘটতে পারে এমন মধুর যূথবদ্ধতার মধ্যে কোন অকাম্য বিচ্ছেদ ?
মাটি
ঘনাদা প্লেন চালাচ্ছেন। আয়েষা নামক প্লেন রীতিমতো বোমার আক্রমণের মধ্যে। কিন্তু চালক যে ঘনাদা। কোন বিপদ ঘটছে না। নাহ। ঘনাদাকে যারা চেনেন তারা নিশ্চয়ই এ খবরে চমকাচ্ছেন না। কিন্তু চার মূর্তিমান নিত্য শ্রোতারা যেভাবে নানা রকম ঠাট্টা যুক্ত টিকা টিপ্পনি শুরু করে দিলো যে গল্প গেল থেমে। অনেক সাধ্যিসাধনা আর খাদ্যদ্রব্যের প্রলোভনে আবার গল্পে সামিল করা গেল ঘনাদাকে।
শিবুর মাসতুতো ভাই শম্ভু এক ভাঁড় ঘি এনে উপহার দিচ্ছে ঘনাদাকে। শম্ভুর নিজের ডেয়ারির ঘি। নেফা নামে সবুজ প্রকৃতি ঘেরা এক সস্তা জমির প্রলোভন। সেখানে নাকি ডেয়ারি করার দারুণ সুবিধা। জমির নানান প্রসংশার মধ্যেই ঘনাদার উৎকট সন্দেহ জমির মাটি চেনা নিয়ে।
উঠে এলো যত কঠিন কঠিন নাম। হাউসা, ইয়োরুবা, ফুলানি, ইবো, বিয়াফ্রা। নবাগত শম্ভুর মুখ তো হাঁ। তার উপরে আবার প্রশ্ন – সুবনসিরি চেনে কিনা শম্ভু। ডাফলা আপাতানিদের চেনে কিনা। লজ্জ্বায় মরে যাবার জোগাড়। এর মধ্যে প্লেন চালানোর সংযোগটা তো ঘনাদার গল্পে আছেই। প্লেনের মধ্যে আগুণ – আয়েষার থরথর করে কেঁপে ওঠা – জলন্ত প্লেন ধরে ঘনাদার ঝুলে থাকা – ঝাঁকড়া গাছের গুল্মর মধ্যে পড়ে প্রাণ রক্ষা পাওয়া – এইসব। তবে হ্যাঁ, এই গল্পে একটি দশাসই কুদু মোষের গল্প সাংঘাতিক। খ্যাপা মোষকে মেরে তার খুর শিং এবং মাটি ঘনাদার সহকারী কেনিকে দিয়ে আসার গল্প – যা শুনে অনভিজ্ঞ শম্ভুর মুখের হাঁ আরও বিস্তৃত হয়েছে। বেচারা শম্ভু।
নাচ
যখন বিদঘুটে কোন টেলিগ্রাম আসে – যাকে বলা যায় অত্যন্ত রহস্যজনক – আর ৫ টা সাধারণ বাঙালির যা হয় ঘনাদার ঠিক তার উলটো। হবেই তো। তিনি যে এক ও অদ্বিতীয় ঘনাদা। বিচিত্র সব আঁকিবুকি করা টেলিগ্রাম আসার পর কোন ভয় ভাবান্তর নেই ঘনাদার মুখ ভূগোলে। বরং নিশ্চিন্তে ভাবসমৃদ্ধ গল্পের আসরে দিব্যি মেতে গেলেন তিনি।
সুদূর দক্ষিণ আমেরিকার বলিভিয়া। তারই উত্তর পূর্বের বেনি নদীর জলা বাদার অজানা অগম্য অঞ্চল। সেখানে নদীর চরে বাঁধা অবস্থায় বন্দী হয়ে পড়ে আছেন প্রিয় ঘনাদা। বলিভিয়ার আজব লজঝড় ট্রেনের ছাদে আসতে গিয়ে আহারার সাথে পরিচয়। কিসব খনি টনির দলিল আনতে দেশের বাড়ি যাচ্ছে সে। জঙ্গলের মাঝে ট্রেন বিগড়োলো। আহারার সাথে অদ্ভূত বাজি। আর তার পরিণতি এরকমভাবে ঘনাদার নদীর চরে পড়ে থাকা।
আচ্ছা বেকায়দার পরিস্থিতিতে পড়লে মানুষ কী করে ? হতভম্ব হয়ে যায়। বাঁচবার চেষ্টায় চিৎকার চেঁচামেচি করে। কিন্তু ঘনাদা পকেট থেকে নোটবুক পেন্সিল বের করে নানান নক্সা আঁকতে বসলেন। সেই নকশার জোরেই ঘনাদা দুদিনে নির্বাসনের চর থেকে বেরিয়ে মাদ্রে দে দিয়স আর বেনি নদী যেখানে মিশেছে সেখানে মোরেনো শহরে পৌঁছে সরকারি প্লেনে পরের দিনই পুয়ের্তো সুয়ারেজএ পৌঁছে গেলেন। দলিল নিয়ে একপ্রস্থ দৈহিক উচিৎ শিক্ষা দিতেই আহারা পুরো কব্জায়। আহারার কৌতূহল নিরসনে বেশি সময় নেননি ঘনাদা। নকশার ছবিগুলোতে নানাধরণের নৃত্যায়ত আঁকিবুকির ব্যাখ্যা দিতেই চক্ষু চড়কগাছ আহারার – সেই সাথে গল্পের শ্রোতাদেরও।
ধুলো
ফ্লোরা না ডোরা কারো একটা খোঁজে আমাদের ঘনাদা। ঘনাদাও কিনা মহিলাদের খোঁজে ? ভাবা যায় ? নাহ ভুল ভেঙেছিল পরে। ফ্লোরা আর ডোরা আসলে হলো বিখ্যাত তুফান-ঝড়। একা ফ্লোরাই তো সাত হাজার একশো তিরানব্বুই জনকে সাবাড় করেছে। শুধু এরাই তো নয়। ফ্লোরা, হিল্ডা, হেজেল, হ্যাটি, ডোনা, ক্লিও , অড্রে – এক একতা শতনামের শতমারি। তো এরকম ভয়ালভয়ঙ্কর খুণে ফ্লোরা ডোরাদের জন্য ঘনাদার কেন মাথাব্যথা ? আহা! এদের মতো শ্রীমতি ভয়ঙ্করীদের সামলানোর জন্য ঘনাদা ছাড়া আর কে আছে এ ত্রিভুবনে ?
নাহ। ঘনাদা কিন্তু সামলে ছিলেন তাদের সহজেই। না, সামলাবেন এটা জানাই ছিল। তবে সামলানোর উপায়টি অত্যন্ত অবাক করার মতো। সামলেছেন সামান্য ধুলো দিয়ে। হ্যাঁ, সামান্য ধুলো।
কারি নামের এক বন্ধুর সাথে তখন ঘনাদা বেল দ্বীপের একটা সুলুপে থাকেন। পঞ্চমুখী শংখ সংগ্রহের নেশায়। সমুদ্রের বুক চিরে তাদের তোলপাড় ঘোরাঘুরি। প্রভিডেন্স প্রণালীতে হঠাৎ তুফান ডাকিনী লরা জাগতে শুরু করল। কারি তখন সভয়ে কাঁপছে – কাঁদছে। কিন্তু অকুতোভয় বীর ঘনাদা হারপুন কামানে ধুলোর গোলা ঠেসে নিয়ে অপেক্ষায় যুদ্ধের জন্য। একসময় লরা ভয়ঙ্করী হয়ে উঠতেই ঘনাদা তাগ করে ছুঁড়লেন ধুলোভরা গোলা। ব্যাস অবিশ্রান্ত বৃষ্টিধারায় ঝরে পড়া লরা নেতিয়ে কাত। কী সেই ধুলো ? সিলভার আইয়োডাইড। ঘনাদার সাথে পেরে ওঠা সত্যিই দায়।
কাদা
ঘনাদা স্টিমারপার্টিতে যেতে চাইছেন না। অজুহাত ফতুয়া প্যান্ট নোংরা। ডাইংক্লিনিং এ সচরাচর পাঠাতেও চান না। তো শুরু হলো আওয়াজ দেওয়া। কিন্তু ঘনাদা কি দমবার পাত্র ? কাপড়চোপড়ে কাদা লেগে থাকার জন্য রসালো টিকা টিপ্পনিতেও ঘনাদার মন্তব্য – “একটু আধটু কাদা থাকা তো ভালো”। ব্যাস। এই মন্তব্য আসলে ইনিংসের ট্রায়াল বল। শুরু হল সামান্য কাদার দাগ থেকে একটা গোটা রাজ্য উদ্ধার হয়ে যাওয়ার অসামান্য কাহিনী।
আর্জেন্টিনা হয়ে পুরনো বন্ধু বেলমন্টের খোঁজ নিতে ব্রাজিলের মাতো গ্রসসো অঞ্চলে আরাগুয়াইয়া নদীর দেশে ঘনাদা। বেলমন্টোর দেখা পেলেও তেমন অভ্যর্থনা জোটে নি। আসলে অত্যন্ত বিমর্ষ বেলমন্টো তখন তার অতি সাধের র্যাঞ্চ বিক্রি করে দিতে চায় ব্রাজিল সরকারকে। কারণ ? অবিশ্বাস্য হলেও সত্যি। মশা। ঘন কালো প্রলয়ের মেঘের মতো সবকিছু ঢেকে মুছে দেওয়া যোজনের পর যোজন মশার ঝাঁক। কোন মশা নিরোধক কিছুতেই যার বিনাশ অসম্ভব।
তো সমস্যা সংহারক ঘনাদাকে কখনো থামানো যায় ? শুরু হলো ঘনাদার কাদার কেরামতি। প্যান্টের পায়ের ভাঁজে পাওয়া কাদার সামান্য ছিটে খামচা মেরে তুলে নিয়ে গুঁড়ো করে শুকনো খাল বিলে ছড়িয়ে দিলেন। আসলে ওগুলো ছিলো সাইনোলেবিয়াস বেলট্রি। এক সপ্তার মধ্যে তুমুল বর্ষা – ভয়ঙ্কর বান। সেই শুকনো কাদার গুঁড়ো জল পেয়ে হয়ে উঠল মশার বংশ নির্বংশের হাতিয়ার। ঘনাদা তাই কখনো আর ধোপদুরস্ত থাকতে চান না। ময়লা কাদা বলে পোশাকে লেগে থাকা আপাত অবাঞ্ছিত শত্রুকে তিনি পরম মিত্রই ভাবেন।
টল
দীঘা না দার্জিলিং ? কোথায় ঘনাদাকে নিয়ে যাওয়া হবে ? এই নিয়ে দুটো দল। প্রবল টানাটানি। যাকে বলা যায় তুমুল টানাহ্যাঁচড়া। মতান্তর মনান্তর চিৎকার চেঁচামেচি – প্রায় যুদ্ধং দেহি মেজাজ। ঘনাদা স্রেফ জল ঢেলে দিলেন কিনা একটা টেলিগ্রাম আসার সম্ভাবনা নিয়ে! টেলিগ্রাম এলেই নাকি ঘনাদাকে বেরিয়ে পড়তে হবে। সে টেলিগ্রামকে অমান্য করার নাকি কোন উপায় নেই।
কী সেই আশ্চর্য টেলিগ্রাম ? নাহ, নতুন করে তো আর চমকাবার কিছু নেই। ঘনাদার কাছে তো সবই সম্ভব। খোঁজ করতে হবে নাকি শুধু এক ফোঁটা জলের। জল না বলে এটাকে টল বলাই সমীচীন। ব্যাস গল্প শুরু। দীঘা দার্জিলিং রইল মাথায়। শুরু নিউইয়র্কে। সেখান থেকে পেরুর লিমা হয়ে ভাড়া করা সুলুপ এ গ্যালাপ্যাগস দ্বীপ। সেখান থেকে স্কুনারএ হাওয়াই, হাওয়াই থেকে ব্রিগ্যানটাইন এ সামোয়া , সামোয়া থেকে একটা কেচ এ বারাটোঙা – ফিজি – নিউগিনি। জলপথে প্রায় এসপার ওসপার গোটা প্রশান্ত মহাসাগর। অবশেষে ক্যাপ্টেন ডোনাটের সন্ধান পাওয়া। এক ফোঁটা টলের হদিশও পাওয়া গেল ম্যাকডোনাল্ড রেঞ্জে।
কৌতূহল মেটালেন ঘনাদা। টলের সুললিত বৈজ্ঞানিক ব্যাখ্যায় জানা গেল টলের কী সাংঘাতিক বিপজ্জনকতা। এমন ছোঁয়াচে যে টলের সামান্যতম ছোঁয়াতেও গোটা পৃথিবী শুক্রর মতো অসহ্য গরম করে তুলবে। সমস্ত প্রাণ হবে বিপন্ন। তাই বিশ্বপ্রেমী ঘনাদা টেলিগ্রাম এলেই বেরিয়ে পড়ার অপেক্ষায়। বলাই বাহুল্য দীঘা বা দার্জিলিং ভ্রমণ এই মহোত্তর জয়যাত্রা সম্ভাবনার কাছে ডাহা ফেলুরাম।
হ্যালির বেচাল
হ্যালির ধূমকেতু আসছে। তাকে নিয়ে তো নানান জল্পনা কল্পনা। তো ৭৬ বছর অন্তর দেখা দেওয়া ধূমকেতুর ব্যাপারে ঘনাদা মত দেবেন না তাই কখনো হয় ? অবশ্য ঘনাদার মতামত নেবার জন্য শিবুকে জোরালো গলায় প্রতিবাদও করতে হয়েছে। ইচ্ছে করেই নানান জ্যোতির্বিজ্ঞানীদের তথ্যকে ধূলিসাৎ করতে হয়েছে।
ব্যাস, এতেই মন্ত্রের মতো কাজ। ঘনাদা মুখ খুলেছেন হ্যালির ধূমকেতুর গতিকাল বা গতিপথ নিয়ে। হ্যালির বেচাল নিয়ে তার প্রগাঢ় তত্ত্ব ব্যাখ্যা করেছেন সেই পরিচিত মেজাজে। হ্যালির ধূমকেতু সুপারনোভা নক্ষত্রের বিস্ফোরণের দরুণ আর তার ধাক্কায় সূর্যকে পাক দেওয়ার বদলে হয় তার ভেতর মরণ ঝাঁপ দেবে কিংবা খসে যাওয়া লেজটুকু রেখে পালাবে।
ঘনাদার আরো মনে হয়েছে এ নাকি মানুষের কর্মফল। গিয়েত্তোর গুঁতোয় ধূমকেতুর মাথা হোক বা লেজ হোক সেখান থেকে যা বেরিয়ে আসবে সেটাই সাত রাজার ধন মানিকের চেয়ে অবাক করা এক বস্তু। ছিয়াত্তর বছর মহাকাশ পাড়ি দেবার এক আশ্চর্য বিবরণ। ছিয়াত্তর বছর আগে রকেটে এমন দূরদর্শন-ক্যামেরা ? কোন সে উন্নত মানব সভ্যতার চরম আশ্চর্য প্রতিভূ ? উন্নত মানবসভ্যতার সেই উন্নত প্রাণী এতদিন আমাদের দূরবিনেই বা ধরা পড়েনি কেন ? ওই যে সুদূর কালো নীহারিকা সেখানেও যে কতো সব দুর্জ্ঞেয় রহস্য!
বলাবাহুল্য এমন সব বিজ্ঞানভিত্তিক অনুমানের গুঁতোয় নিয়মিত শ্রোতৃমণ্ডলী আবারও যথারীতি দিশাহারা।
দাদা
জব্বর খবর। ঘনাদা মেস ছেড়ে চলে গেছেন। একেবারে তল্পিতল্পা গুটিয়ে। কারণ ? এভারেস্টের মাথায় টুপি রেখে আসার জ্যান্ত সত্যিটাকে সবাই মিলে সন্দেহ করার স্পর্ধাটাকে নিতে পারেন নি ঘনাদা। তাই ঘনাদার অচানক অন্তর্ধান। আর তার পরেপরেই কিনা এক ন তুন দাদার প্রবেশ ঘনাদার সেই চির পরিচিত মেসের নির্দিষ্ট ঘরে! তার মুখ থেকেই জানা গেল সেই হাড় হিম করা মারাত্মক সংবাদ – ঘনাদা নাকি আর ফিরবে না। বার্লিনে কাইজার উইলহেল্ম স্ট্রাস নামক রাস্তায় নাকি সে রকমই সিদ্ধান্ত।
দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধ পরবর্তী ধ্বংসমুখী বার্লিনের পথঘাট। কালী পুজোর আতসবাজীর মতো চারদিকে বোমা গুলি গালা চলছে। তার মধ্যে নাকি হিসেবের কল তৈরীর পথিকৃৎ ডঃ বেনারকে নিতে ঘনাদা এসেছেন। খাঁড়ির মধ্যে – সমুদ্রের মধ্যে – নানান জলযানের সাহায্যে তারা নাকি তুমুল খোঁজাখুঁজি চালাচ্ছেন। পাচ্ছেন আর না। অবশেষে একদিন তার দেখা মিলল। জানা গেল তার আশ্চর্য বিপদের কাহিনী। বেনার নাকি বুঝতে পারছেন যে তিনি আর কল কে চালাচ্ছেন না , উলটে কলই তাকে চালাচ্ছেন। তার নিজের তৈরী যন্ত্র প্রশ্নের উত্তর দিতে তৈরী। কিন্তু থামা যাবে না। ক্রমাগত প্রশ্ন তাকে করে যেতেই হবে। আর উত্তর তো তার একেবারে নখের ডগায়।
অবশেষে ঘনাদার প্রত্যুৎপন্নমতিত্বেরই জয় হলো। একটা শুধু মোক্ষম প্রশ্ন। আর সেই প্রশ্নেই রোবট কুপোকাত। প্রশ্নটা হলো – গাছ আগে না বীজ আগে ? ঘনাদার পক্ষেই যে এটা সম্ভব।
ঘনাদা ফিরলেন
ঘনাদা নিরুদ্দেশ! বেতার বিজ্ঞপ্তির নিরুদ্দেশ সংক্রান্ত সংবাদও তাই বলে। এ যেন বিনা মেঘে বজ্রপাত। কদিন একটু অস্থির অস্থির ভাব যে ছিলো না তা নয়। চা দিতে গিয়ে আমাদের বনোয়ারিরও নজরে পড়েছে।
দুশ্চিন্তায় যখন সকলের দুচোখ ছানাবড়া – তখন আবার খবর এলো নিচে শালওয়ালা রশিদ খাঁ এসেছে দেখা করতে। আসলে গোটা বিশ্বজুড়ে তো ঘনাদা ভক্ত মানুষের সংখ্যা কম নয়। কবে একবার ঘনাদার পাল্লায় পড়ে শাল সম্পর্কিত জ্ঞানগরিমায় মুগ্ধ হয়েছিলো রশিদ খাঁ। তাকে বিদায় করে পরাশর বর্মার কাছে ঘনাদার খোঁজে যেতে তাই একটু দেরীই হয়ে গেল সকলের।
পরাশর বর্মা তখন বন্ধু কৃত্তিবাস ভদ্রের সাথে বিগলিত কাব্যচর্চায় নিবেদিত প্রাণ। অপেক্ষায় অপেক্ষায় শুধু কাব্য নমুনাই গিলে যেতে হলো। সে নমুনার মধ্যে আদৌ কোন সমাধান সূত্র ছিল কিনা কে জানে। কেটে যাচ্ছে দিন। ঘনাদার দেখা নেই। পরাশর বর্মার ধাঁধাঁ ছড়া নিয়ে তখনো সূত্র নিঃসরণের চেষ্টা। হঠাৎ ফিরে এলেন ঘনাদা।
কিন্তু এ কোন ঘনাদা ? পায়ে বিদ্যাসাগরী হলদে চটি , পরণে সাদা ধুতি পাঞ্জাবী , কাঁধে গেরুয়া চাদর, মাথায় গেরুয়া গান্ধী টুপি। এসেই রামভুজকে খাবারের জন্য দীর্ঘ ফরমায়েশি ফর্দ। অতিকষ্টে জানা গেল তিনি নাকি হিপিদের হোটেলে উঠেছিলেন সাত দিনের জন্য সামান্য একটা চুম্বকের জন্যে। ব্যাস এরপর আর বাকী থাকে ? শুনতে হলো চুম্বক সংগ্রহের ব্যাখ্যা। এক দুশমনের সব কারসাজি ভেস্তে দেবার অতি চমৎকৃত কাহিনী।
আঠারো নয় ঊনিশ
আঠারো নম্বর বনমালি নস্কর লেনের মেসে জোর তোড়জোড়। প্রতিদিন ব্যয় সংকোচ নীতি প্রতিপালন। তাই বিকেলের জলখাবারে সব নিরামিষ আয়োজন। ঘনাদা ব্যাপারটা মেনে নিয়েছেন আবার মনেও নিয়েছেন। মানে রীতিমতো মনে মনে বিরক্ত। জলখাবারের আয়োজনে তিনি আর আসছিলেনই না। নিরামিষ যে তার মুখে একেবারেই রোচে না। অগত্যা তাকে আনতে মহাভারতের তথ্যের বৈধতা নিয়ে চিৎকার জুড়ে দিতেই ঘনাদা তার পাণ্ডিত্য প্রকাশী বাহাদুরি নিতে তড়বড়িয়ে সিঁড়ি বেয়ে হাজির।
তারপর ? যা হয়। কুরুক্ষেত্রে প্রতিদিন কত অক্ষৌহিনী সৈন্য মারা গেছে তাই নিয়ে জম্পেশ বাকযুদ্ধ। ঘনাদা তার চিরায়ত ভঙ্গিতে অত্যন্ত নাটকীয় ভাবে প্রশ্ন তুলে দিলেন কুরুক্ষেত্রের যুদ্ধের দিনসংখ্যা নিয়ে। একটা বাচ্ছা ছেলেও জানে কুরুক্ষেত্রের যুদ্ধ হয়েছিল আঠারো দিনে। কিন্তু যুদ্ধ কথক সঞ্জয়ের বিবরণ নিয়েই প্রশ্ন তুলে দিলেন ঘনাদা। তাঁর মত ওটা আঠারো নয়, ঊনিশ দিন।
ব্যাস। এরপর সম্মিলিত কৌতূহলের ভরা আবহ আর ঘনাদার কুরুক্ষেত্রের সেনাবাহিনীর নতুনতর ব্যাখ্যান। সংখ্যায় দুর্বল পাণ্ডবেরা জায়গা দখলের দৌড়ে নাকি নির্দিষ্ট দিনের একদিন আগেই পৌঁছে গিয়েছিল কুরুক্ষেত্রের অকুস্থলে। যুদ্ধের জন্য পান্ডবদের তড়িঘড়ি জায়গা দখলের সময় তো সঞ্জয় সেখানে উপস্থিতই ছিলো না। এমন একটা চমকপ্রদ বৈপ্লবিক ব্যাখ্যার পরে আর কোন সংশয় কি আর কারো গলা দিয়ে নামতে পারে ?
উল্টে গৌর ছুটল বড়ো রাস্তার মোড়ের দোকানের চিকেন প্যাটিস আর ফিশরোল আনতে। এমন নব মহাভারতীয় ব্যাখ্যানকে সম্মান জানাতে হবে না ?
রবিনসন ক্রুশো মেয়ে ছিলেন
নাহ। চমকে গিয়ে লাভ নেই। এটাও শোনা বাকি ছিল। প্রতিবাদ করে লাভ নেই। কারন কলকাতা শহরের দক্ষিণে একটি জলাশয়ের পাশে সান্ধ্য ভ্রমণবিলাসী চারজনের এই লোভনীয় আড্ডাটিতে তাহলে অকারণ রসভঙ্গ হয়। ঘনশ্যামবাবুর এই অচানক ফোড়নকাটার অভ্যাসের সাথে সবাই অত্যন্ত পরিচিত। তার ব্যাখ্যায় উঠে আসে বহু বহু বিচিত্র বিষয়ের যে অতল জ্ঞানরাশি তাকে শ্রদ্ধা বা সমর্থন বা বিশ্বাস না করেও তো উপায় নেই। এটাও অনস্বীকার্য যে, পান্ডিত্যের ভেজালকে তিনি চাপা দেন বাচনিক মুন্সিয়ানায়।
ড্যানিয়েল ডিফো লিখে থাকলেও রবিনসনের মূল কাহিনী রসদ তিনি কোথা থেকে পেয়েছিলেন তার ব্যাখ্যা দান শুরু হলো এবারে। স্পেনে ব্যবসা সংক্রান্ত কাজে গিয়ে মাদ্রিদে প্রাচীন পুঁথি ঘাঁটতে ঘাঁটতে কিভাবে পেলেন সব তথ্য তার বিবরণ শুরু হল। উঠে আসে মার্কো পোলোর কথা। মার্কো পোলোর জেনোয়া কারাগারে কাটানোর কথা। পিসা নাগরিক রাস্টিসিয়ানোর কথা। সেই রাস্টিসিয়ানোই কারাগারে পোলোর মুগ্ধ শ্রোতা ও অনুগামী হিসাবে ফরাসী ভাষায় সব টুকে রাখত। এর দুশো বছর বাদে ড্যানিয়েল ডিফো নাকি এই পুঁথির সন্ধান পেয়ে রচনা করেন এই রবিনসন ক্রুশো। আসল পুঁথিতে রয়েছে যে সুং রাজবংশের অতীব সুন্দরী রাজকন্যা নান সুর কথা। তার বীরত্বের কথা – তার সৌন্দর্য্যের কথা। নান সুর পরিণতির কথা। সময়ের আনাড়ি হাতের মার খেতে খেতে রবিনসন ক্রুশো হয়ে ওঠার কথা।
বলাবাহুল্য ঘনশ্যামবাবুর বাচনিক পারিপাট্যকে অস্বীকার করার শক্তি কোথায় কারো ?
ছাতা
সুশীল চাকি। মেসের নতুন বোর্ডার। বড্ডো বেরসিক। তার রসকস হীন চোখাচোখা জবাব। বৃষ্টির দিনে ছাতা নিয়ে ঢুকলেন। ধামায় মশলা মুড়ি আর লুডোর আসরে রসভঙ্গ। এর মধ্যে ঘনাদা বেরিয়ে কিছুটা পরে সামান্য ভিজে প্রবেশ করায় সুশীলের গা জ্বালানো মন্তব্য – ছাতা কিনলে এমন বেগ পেতে হয় না। ব্যাস। ঘনাদার গল্প শুরু। সুমাত্রায় ঘনাদা। পাহাড়ি জঙ্গলে ওরাং পেন্ডেক খোঁজার বাসনায়। এখানেই নিরুদ্দেশ ডক্টর সাপিরো। রাকান নদী সংলগ্ন তাঁবুতে ঘনাদা সাপিরোর সহকারী বোথার খোঁজ পান। তার অনুমান বিপজ্জনক পাহাড়ের কোন খাঁজে সাপিরো আটকে। একধরণের মথ দেখতে পেয়ে ঘনাদা তো উল্লসিত। কারণ সাপিরোর পাঠানো শেষ পার্সেলে এই মেয়ে মথের গন্ধ লেগেছিল। এ এমন গন্ধ যা সহজে যায় না। বোথা কিন্তু পাকা শয়তান। লুকোনো সোনাদানার প্রতিই তার লোভ। ঘনাদার মতো দূরদৃষ্টিওয়ালা মানুষের বুঝতে বাকী থাকে না সাপিরোকে বিপদের মুখে ঠেলে দেওয়ার কারিগর এই বোথা। ধরা পড়ে যাওয়ায় বোথা বুঝতে পারে পালাবার পথ বন্ধ। কিন্তু ঘনাদার যে দয়ার শরীর। যত পাকা শয়তানই হোক তাকে কি প্রাণে মারতে পারেন? একটা ছাতা ফেলে রেখে গেলেন ঘনাদা। সেই ছাতায় লিম্যাক্স ফ্ল্যাভাস। খোলসহীন এক জাতের শামুক। এরা ঠিক পয়লা কি দোসরা আগষ্ট ডিম পাড়বেই। এই এক বছর বোথার পাপের শাস্তি। বোথার কথা ভেবেই বোধহয় ঘনাদা আর কখনো কোন ছাতা কেনেন নি। একটু পরে টের পাওয়া গেল সুশিল চাকীর ছাতাটাই ঘনাদার কল্যানে নিরুদ্দেশ। কাকে কোথাও দান করে এসেছেন বোধহয়।
চোখ
ঘনাদা চশমা হারিয়েছেন। তো নতুন চশমা তৈরি করাতে যাওয়ার পরামর্শ দিতেই ঘনাদার নতুন গল্প শুরু। ঘনাদার বক্তব্য ওই চশমা হারানোই উচিৎ। নাহলে দুনিয়ার সবচেয়ে দামি এক প্রাণী যা দেড়শো বছর আগে বিলুপ্ত হয়ে গেছে তা খুঁজে পেয়েও হারিয়ে ফেলার জন্য মনস্তাপ করতে হয় না। প্রাণীটা হল ল্যাট্যাক্স লুট্রিস। সমুদ্রের ভোঁদড়। দেড়শ বছর আগেই তার চামড়ার দাম ছিল অন্তত আট থেকে নয় হাজার টাকা। জাপানের দখলীকৃত ফরমোজা দ্বীপে তখন ঘনাদা। চিনের কিছু প্রাচীন লিপির হরফের উৎপত্তি নিয়ে গবেষণা তখন ঘনাদার কাজ। সেখানেই চোখের ডাক্তার চিং সুনের সাথে আলাপ। চিং সুনের আবার পুরাতত্ত্ব বা পুরাতন জিনিসের বিষয়ে গভীর চর্চা। কয়েকটা পুরাকালের হাড় যার নীচে ব্রোঞ্জের পাত লাগানো এবং তাতে কিছু হরফ খোদাই করা – চিং সুন রেখে যান। পাঠোদ্ধারের আশায়। ঘনাদার চোখে যে একটা দীর্ঘকালীন গঠনগত সমস্যা আছে তা তিনি দেখেই বলে দেন এবং প্রতিশ্রুতি দেন এই প্রেসবাইওপিয়া আর ডাইক্রোম্যাটিক ভিশনের হাত থেকে ঘনাদাকে মুক্তি দেবেন। কিন্তু ঘনাদা ধরে ফেলেন যে এগুলো জাল। তবে হরফের পাঠোদ্ধারও করে ফেলেন। এই চিং সুনেরই পাল্লায় পড়ে সমুদ্রের ভোঁদড় দেখা। তবে শয়তান চিং সুন এই বিরল প্রাণীটাকে ঘনাদা মারফত উদ্ধার করে মেরে ফেলে তার চামড়া নেওয়ার লোভ করতেই ঘনাদার সাথে সংঘাত। ঘনাদাকে প্রথমে একটু শারীরিক ভাবে বেকায়দায় ফেলে বাধ্য করলেও ঘনাদার সাথে পারবে কেন?

কাঁচ
চালটা মন্দ ছিল না। বক্সিং কন্টেস্টের রেফারির জন্য ঘনাদাকে আমন্ত্রণ। প্রেস্টিজ বড়ো বালাই। রাজী না হয়ে উপায় কী! কিন্তু ঘনাদা ইজ ঘনাদা। সঠিক সময়ে পিছলে যাওয়াটা তাঁর বাঁ হাতের খেল। নির্দিষ্ট দিনে নির্দিষ্ট সময়ে তিনি খাটের তলায়। মেঝেতে উপুড়। কাঁচ খুঁজছেন! নাঃ! যে সে কাঁচ নয়। যে ভাঙা কাঁচের টুকরোটা না থাকলে নাকি হিরোসিমার বদলে লণ্ডনেই প্রথম অ্যাটম বোমাটা পড়ত – সেই কাঁচের টুকরো। ১৯৩৯ সালের ১লা সেপ্টেম্বর। বেঙ্গুয়েলা বন্দর থেকে অ্যাঙ্গোলার মাঝামাঝি কুয়াঞ্জা স্টেশনের কাছাকাছি বিহে পাহাড়ের উদ্দেশ্যে রওনা দিয়েছেন ঘনাদা। তারপর যা হয়। ট্রেনে পাপেনের দুজন ষণ্ডা সাগরেদের মোকাবিলা। পাপেনের লক্ষ্যপথ নাকি লুয়াওয়ের এক হাসপাতাল। কিন্তু দেখা হল বিহে উপত্যকায়। বোঝা গেল পাপেনের আসল মতলব। ইউরেনিয়ামে ঠাসা পিচব্লেন্ডের শিরা তার উদ্দেশ্য। বলা বাহুল্য সে ভাগীদার চায় না। পিস্তল উঁচিয়ে ঘনাদাকে তাড়া। অমনি বেজে উঠল ঘনাদার পুরনো অনুচর নোয়ালার সাথে পরিকল্পনা মাফিক ঢাক। ওই বিহে অধিত্যকার জংলিরা এই বহিরাগতদের সামনে পেলে – তাদের পাহাড়ি সম্পদের ভাগীদারদের কী করতে পারে তা পাপেনদের বুঝতে আর বাকী নেই। কিন্তু ঘনাদা সবসময়েই তো পরিত্রাতা। প্রথমে দেশলাইয়ের খোঁজ করে ব্যর্থ। হঠাৎ মনে পড়ল পকেটে দুরবিনের আলগা হয়ে যাওয়া কাঁচটার কথা। কাঁচের ভেতর দিয়ে সূর্যের আলোর ফোকাস। পাহাড়ি ঘাসে আগুণ। উত্তর পশ্চিম ঝোড়ো হাওয়ায় আগুণের লকলকে শিখা। জংলিরা কি আর নাগাল পায়?
কেঁচো
কিচিন্দের শুনেও ঘনাদা যেতে রাজি! শিবুর কাল্পনিক জন্মস্থান। ঘনাদাকে প্যাঁচে ফেলতেই বানিয়ে বলা। এখন নিজেদেরই কাল্পনিক কিচিন্দে বানিয়ে তুলতে প্যাঁচে পড়ার অবস্থা। পাঁচ ক্রোশ দুর্গম কাদার রাস্তা – একটাও আস্ত বাড়ি নেই, বেগুন পোড়া কচুপোড়া ইত্যাদি খেতে হবে – এসব শুনেও তিনি অরাজি নন, মজা পাচ্ছেন। রীতিমতো উদগ্রীব। কিন্তু যাওয়ার মুখে কেঁচোর কথা শুনে তিনি শুরু করলেন। অস্ট্রেলিয়া আর নিউজিল্যাণ্ডের মাঝামাঝি নরফোক দ্বীপে মিস্টার জোয়াকিমের সাথে দেখা। ওয়ালিস দ্বীপাবলির একটি ন্যাড়া দ্বীপ ইজারা নিয়েছিলেন ১৫ বছর আগে। সেটা হারিয়ে ফেলেছেন। ইজারার মেয়াদ এই ১৯৫২তেই শেষ। তাই দুশ্চিন্তা। অগত্যা হারানো দ্বীপ খুঁজে পেতে ঘনাদাই পরিত্রাতা। কিন্তু সেই দ্বীপে পৌঁছানো গেল ১৯৫৩র ১লা জানুয়ারী। সেখানেও বাধা। সশস্ত্র গুন্ডাদের নিয়ে হাজির সিডনি। মেয়াদ ফুরনো এই দ্বীপের রেজিস্ট্রি করবে বলে। কিন্তু ঘনাদার মগজাস্ত্রর কাছে হার মানবে না এমন কেউ আছে নাকি ত্রিভুবনে! আন্তর্জাতিক তারিখ রেখা পার হয়ে সামোয়া দ্বীপপুঞ্জের ওপরে প্লেনে তখন যে ১৯৫২র ৩১শে ডিসেম্বর। তাই বছরের শেষ দিনে আবার ইজারার মেয়াদ বাড়িয়ে নেওয়া জলভাত। জোয়াকিম তো আনন্দে আত্মহারা। কিন্তু ঘনাদা সব কৃতিত্ব দিলেন কেঁচোদের। যাদের অসীম করুণায় অর্থাৎ নীচের মাটি উপরে তোলায় ন্যাড়া দ্বীপ সবুজে সবুজ। বহু বছর আগে যে ঘনাদাই যে কেঁচোর ডিমের গুটি ওই দ্বীপে ছেড়ে দিয়ে এসেছিলেন তা বলাইবাহুল্য। তাই কেঁচোদের প্রতি সৌজন্য ভক্তিতেই কিচিন্দে যাওয়া মুলতুবি।

ঘনাদাকে তো আমরা জানি। কী কথা থেকে কি কথা পেড়ে ফেলে সবাইকে একেবারে নির্বাক শ্রোতা বানিয়ে দিতে পারেন। হচ্ছিল হয়তো বন্যার কথা – সেখান থেকে তিনি দিব্যি শুরু করে দিলেন টাইড্যাল ওয়েভের আলোচনা। তো সেরকমভাবেই সেদিন কথায় কথায় এনে ফেললেন মশার আলোচনা। সাখালিন দ্বীপে জংগল আর পাহাড়ের পাণ্ডববর্জিত জায়গা। ঘনাদা ও ডাক্তার মার্টিন দুজন কুলি সহযোগে তানলিনের খোঁজে বেরিয়ে জঙ্গলের মাঝে গুপ্ত বাড়ির খোঁজ পান অতি কষ্টে। নিশিমারা নামে এক প্রত্নতত্ত্ববিদের রহস্যময় গবেষণাগার সেটা। ক্রমশ প্রকাশ পায় তার সাংঘাতিক কাজকারবার। মশার লালার রাসায়নিক পরিবর্তন করে এমন একটি বিষাক্ত মশা নির্মান করেছেন যার দংশন মানে অবশ্যম্ভাবী মৃত্যু। কাঁচের নলে সেই মশা সযত্নে রাখা। দুর্ভাগ্যের বিষয় সেই ভয়ংকর মশার কামড়েই মারা গেছে তানলিন। এই গোপন মারণ রসায়নাগার জেনে ফেলার অপরাধে এই মশা অস্ত্র প্রয়োগেই ঘনাদা ও ডাক্তার মার্টিনের প্রান সংহার করতে চান শয়তান নিশিমারা। কিন্তু ঘনাদার বিক্রমের কাছে তিনি শিশু। মুহূর্তের ঝটকায় ঘনাদা কাচের নলটিকে মেঝেতে ফেলে চুরমার করে দেন। মশাও বেরিয়ে ঘরময় ঘুরে বেড়াচ্ছে মানুষ দংশাবে বলে। ঘরের খিল খুলে পালাতে যাবেন ঘনাদা – হঠাৎ লক্ষ্য করলেন যুযুৎসুর প্যাঁচে মার্টিনকে মাটিতে পেড়ে ফেলেছেন নিশিমারা। আর তার মাথার উপরে উড়ছে সেই মশা। এক হ্যাঁচকা টানে মার্টিনকে ঘনাদা সরিয়ে দিতেই মশা নিশিমারাকে কামড়ায়। ঘনাদার প্রবল থাপ্পড়। সঙ্গে সঙ্গে মশা আর নিশিমারা দুজনের ভবলীলা সাঙ্গ।
নুড়ি
বর্ষা বিধৌত আবহাওয়া। অলস মুহূর্ত। সময় যেন আর কাটছেই না। কোন বিষয় নিয়েই তাতানো যাচ্ছে না। হঠাৎ ওয়েট লিফটিং এর প্রসঙ্গ তুলতেই ঘনাদা মুখর। পাথর তোলার গল্প। সামান্য একটা নুড়ি তুলতেই একটা দ্বীপ নাকি ফেটে চৌচির। নিউ হেব্রাইডিজের আনিওয়া দ্বীপে ভিলা বন্দরে তখন ঘনাদার বাস। টিনের চাল দেওয়া মেটে একখানা ঘর। তো ঘনাদার অজান্তে একদিন পেত্রা সেই নড়বড়ে ঘরে ঢুকে সবকিছু বেদখল করতে চায়। গুণ্ডামির জন্য ঘনাদা তাকে একটু উচিৎ শিক্ষা দেবেন না তাই কখনো হয়? তারপর অবশ্য দোস্তি করতেই হলো। বোঝা গেল পেত্রাও এসেছে গন্ধকের খনি খোঁজার ব্যবসায়। ঘনাদার অবশ্য চন্দন কাঠের ব্যবসা তখন। ছ’বছর পরে ঘনাদা ব্যবসা গুটিয়ে ফেরার কথা ভাবছেন। তখন একটা নতুন দ্বীপে অপদেবতার কথা শুনে ঘনাদা দারুন কৌতূহলী। পাহাড়ের ওপরে বিরাট বিকট মূর্তি নাকি প্রায়ই দেখা যায়। আদিবাসী অশিক্ষিত মানুষেরা নানান চেষ্টা করে সেই ভূত তাড়ানোর চেষ্টা করে ক্লান্ত ও ব্যর্থ। সেখানে গিয়ে গুহার মধ্যে পেত্রার সাথে দেখা। থরে থরে সাজানো কিম্ভূত সব পোশাক দেখে বুঝতে বাকী রইল না যে বদমাস পেত্রারই এসব কারসাজি। ভূত সেজে আদিবাসীদের ভয় দেখানো। একটা গরম জলের হ্রদের লোভেই তার এই নিভৃতবাস। হ্রদের নীচে নানান দুষ্প্রাপ্য নীল নুড়ি। তার মধ্যে আছে নানান দামী হিরে। লোভী শয়তান পেত্রার সেই আশায় বজ্রপাত ঘটালেন ঘনাদা। একটা নুড়ি তুলতেই সেই আগ্নেয়গিরি ফেটে চৌচির।
শিশি
প্ল্যানটা আঁটা হয়েছিল জব্বর। মসিঁয়ে সুস্তেল চিঠি দিয়েছেন বিজ্ঞান কংগ্রেসে ঘনাদাকে বক্তৃতার আহ্বান জানিয়ে। এটা শুনেও নির্বিকার ঘনাদা। উলটে সুস্তেল যে আসল সময়ে ঘনাদার ভয়ে পালাবেন তাও জানিয়ে দিলেন। কার্টোগ্রাফার হিসাবে সে যে ঘনাদার তুলনায় নেহাতই শিশু সেকথাও জানিয়ে দিতে ভুললেন না। নারবরো দ্বীপে কিভাবে একটা শিশির জন্য ঘনাদাকে চুরি করতে গিয়ে রক্ষা পেয়েছিল সুস্তেল এবং তার সঙ্গী – সেই বিবরণে ঘনাদা মেতে উঠলেন। গ্যালাপ্যাগোস দ্বীপপুঞ্জের মধ্যে ইংরাজী J হরফের মতো ইসাবেলা , তার মাথার বাঁদিকে ফুটকির মতো নারবরো দ্বীপে ডেরা বেঁধেছেন ঘনাদা। সঙ্গী ইকুয়েডরের আদিবাসী ভীতু নিমারা। সে তো বালির চড়ায় অগুণতি ইগুয়ানাদের গিজগিজ করতে দেখে প্রায় নারি ছাড়ার অবস্থা। এক রাত্রে তো শয়তান দেখেছে বলে কী ভীষণ কান্নাকাটি। দেখা মিলল নীলতিমির মতো দশাসই এক প্রাণীর। তাদের ছবি তোলা যখন চলছে , তখনই পিস্তল হাতে এক আগন্তুক এগিয়ে আসে। সুস্তেল। আটলান্টিকের তলায় রিফট ভ্যালির খাদে রয়েছে কুবেরের ধনভাণ্ডার। ঘনাদার সাহায্যে তা লুঠ করবে সুস্তেল। জলের মধ্যে ভাসমান থাকার জন্য বেরোলো শিশি। শিশিতে ছিল ক্লোরেলা নামে আনুবীক্ষণিক ফাঙ্গাস। উদ্ভূত বিষের হাত থেকে রেহাই পাওয়ার জন্যই এই ক্লোরেলার প্রয়োজন। আসলে সুস্তেল চেয়েছিল একটা ম্যাপ হাতাতে। তার জন্য পিস্তল – শক্তি প্রয়োগ। কিন্তু ঘনাদার সাথে পারবে কেন? সুস্তেল আর তার এক সঙ্গী ঘনাদার জুতোর শুকতলা থেকে একটা গোপন ম্যাপ নিয়ে চলে যায়।
তেল
ঘনাদার হাত লেগে গৌরের অতি কষ্টের সংগ্রহ “ইন্দ্রলুপ্ত নিবারণী” তেলের শিশি পড়ে গিয়ে সব তেল খতম। বিরক্ত ও রাগান্বিত গৌর। ঘনাদার শুরু হল তেলের উপাখ্যান। ম্যাকের অতিথি হয়ে ঘনাদা দুবার শীতে ওয়েস্ট ইন্ডিজে তার দ্বীপে মাছ ধরে পানসি চালিয়ে সমুদ্র সৈকতে স্নান সেরে রোদ পোয়ানোর দারুণ অভিজ্ঞতা পেয়েছেন। এই দুটো দ্বীপের নাম কমা আর ড্যাশ।
কিন্তু সেবার বিষণ্ণ ও উদবিগ্ন ম্যাক জানাল কোন এক অদ্ভূত অভিশাপেই বোধহয় দুটো দ্বীপেই আর কোন মাছ আসে না। আসে না কোন পাখিও। গাদা গাদা বৈজ্ঞানিকের দ্বারস্থ হয়েও ম্যাক কারণ জানতে ব্যর্থ। তাই নিত্য সঙ্গী ডুগানকে দ্বীপদুটো বেচে দিতে চান।
সুতরাং বিশেষ দিন ক্ষণে ঘনাদার দ্বীপে পৌঁছে যাওয়া। ডুগানও সঙ্গী। সব কিছু দেখে বুঝে নিউইয়র্কে ফিরে ঘনাদা ম্যাকের কাছে দেড় লাখ ডলার চাইল। তারপর দুটো স্টিমার আর লোকজন নিয়ে ঘনাদা আবার সেই জোড়া দ্বীপে। একটা স্টিমার থেকে তেল শুষে নেওয়া পলিউরেথিনের কুচি বা ফেনা ছড়ানো হবে। আর একটা থেকে মাটি কাটা হবে। এতেই বেরিয়ে পড়ল ডুগানের স্বরূপ। খনিজতাত্বিক ডুগান জানত এই দ্বীপের গভীরে আছে মহা মূল্যবান প্যালেডিয়ম ও অসমিয়ম। তাই ডুগান সস্তা পেট্রোলের গাদ কিনে গোপনে ঢেলে দেন দ্বীপের কাছে। যার প্রভাবে প্ল্যাংকটন বিনষ্ট হয়ে দুটো দ্বীপই হারিয়েছে মাছ আর পাখি। শয়তান ডুগান দৈহিক বাধা দিতে এসেছিল ঠিকই। কিন্তু ঘনাদার সাথে পারবে কেন?
টুপি
ঘনাদার চিরাচরিত সিগারেট ধার করা। তিন হাজার অতিক্রান্ত সংখ্যার হিসাব নিয়ে ঘনাদার অভিমান। সেই মান ভাঙাতে শিবু আর গৌরের পুঁথি ঘেঁটে কিছু অং বং চং তিব্বতি শব্দ মুখস্থ করা। ভাবা হয়েছিলো এই শব্দবন্ধ দিয়েই ঘনাদাকে দিব্যি কাত করা যাবে। হায় রে ভাগ্য। কাত তো দূরের কথা। শুরু অত্যাশ্চর্য রুনের শিকড়ের কাহিনী। তা থেকেই টুপি ফেরত আনতে না পারার উপাখ্যান।
বৌদ্ধ মঠে তিব্বতি পুঁথির অন্তর্ধান রহস্য ভেদে ঘনাদা ছাড়া আর কার ডাক পড়তে পারে! জাল মোহান্ত সেজে তানাকার মুখোমুখি ঘনাদা। এভারেস্ট জয় আসল উদ্দেশ্য। থুম্বু হিমবাহ দিয়ে উঠে একটা পাহাড়ি ফাটলের মধ্যে তাদের অবস্থান। বলাই বাহুল্য রক্ত জমানো হাড় হিম করা প্রবল ঠান্ডা। তার মধ্যেই ঘনাদারা দেখতে পাচ্ছেন বরফ ঢাকা পাহাড়ি পথে ঘুরে বেড়াচ্ছে ইয়েতিরা। অদ্ভূতভাবে তারা বরফ খুঁড়ছে। কারণটা তিব্বতি পুঁথি অনুযায়ী রুণের শিকড়। ঘনাদাদের টের পেয়ে ইয়েতিরা পালাল। কিন্তু তাদের খোঁড়া গর্তে মিলল সেই রুণের শিকড় – যা খেলে শীতের অনুভব দূরে সরে যায়। কিন্তু ঘনাদার উদ্দেশ্য জ্যান্ত ইয়েতিকে লাসো দড়িতে বেঁধে নিয়ে যাওয়া। প্রাথমিক ভাবে সফল ঘনাদা। দড়িতে বাঁধা পড়া ইয়েতি তখন টেনে নিয়ে যাচ্ছে ঘনাদা আর তানাকাকে। এভারেস্টের উপরে একটা ঢিবি দেখে ঘনাদা টুপিটা লাগিয়েও দিতে পেরেছেন। কিন্তু আসল কাজটা – জ্যান্ত ইয়েতি ধরা অধরাই থেকে গেল। পাহাড়ের ঘষা খেয়ে খেয়ে দড়িটা ছিঁড়ে গেল যে!
Umbrella
Sushil Chaki is the new boarder of the mess. He is a a typical prosaic man with blunt tongue. On a rainy day he came in with his umbrella and interrupted our party of Ludo with spicy puffed rice in the wicker basket. In the meanwhile when Ghanada came from outside slightly drenched, Sushil passed an irritating remark – “one could avoid such a mess by carrying an umbrella”. That’s it! Ghanada began a story. Ghanada went to Sumatra looking for Orang Pendek in the mountain forest. Dr. Sapiro also went missing there. In a tent by the shores of Rakan river Ghanada found Sapiro’s assistant Botha. He suspected Sapiro was perhaps stuck in the notch of a dangerous mountain. In the meantime Ghanada got excited seeing a moth, because in the last parcel that Sapiro sent him had the same smell of a female moth. Its scent is such that lingers on for a long time. But Botha was a seasoned crook. He was greedy about finding hidden gold and treasures. It didn’t take long for a farsighted man like Ghanada to understand that Botha orchestrated the plan to send Sapiro off in danger. Once his secret was out, Botha realized he had nowhere to escape. But Ghanada is full of mercy. No matter how big a seasoned crook Botha was, how could he take his life? So before heading off he left behind an umbrella. There was Limacus flavus in it – a kind of skinless snail. They laid eggs on 1st or 2nd August for sure. And that one year was the punishment he had decided for Botha’s sin. Since then Ghanada never bought another umbrella – perhaps because it reminded him of Botha. Sometime later we found out that Sushil’s umbrella itself was missing thanks to Ghanada. Perhaps he donated it to someone somewhere.
Vote for Ghanada
‘Vote for Ghanada’ – the posters were put up everywhere on the streets. Who could imagine such a thing? Ghanada contesting election! He heard the babus who want him in the polls came to pick him up, but Ghanada was unruffled as usual. Then when the men came dressed up and ready to teach him a lesson, Ghanada began the tale of the manatee.
It was the time of great discord between Haiti’s two power hungry parties Duvalier and Barbot. Ghanada attended one Voodoo aka mumbo-jumbo party and exposed the ruse. When the shaman had to spell his charms as per Ghanada’s instructions, he failed to move his stick even a little bit. Instead Ghanada made the stick dance to his own tune, using magic tricks, and charmed everyone present.
Then what followed was expected as usual. Ghanada’s popularity increased in Haiti and also the number of his enemies. Many came to him to learn his magic formula. They were dumbfounded when Ghanada told the story of how he had left the manatees in the great Lake Parima. So they planned to use his skills to notch up the hidden treasures of El Dorado. Using weapons they tried to intimidate Ghanada to agree. Needless to say, they were all knocked-out by Ghanada’s strategic moves.
Ghanada had put Kaplan in charge of the manatees who keep the ocean clean by eating the seaweeds. But he agreed to the job on one condition: Ghanada will never contest in the election. If he fails to keep his promise Kaplan will no longer take responsibility of protecting the hidden treasures. So how could Ghanada break such a noble promise for the sake of an ordinary election?
Ghanada Came
The very first residents of the famous mess-bari (boarding house) at 72 Bonomali Naskar Lane were four men – Shibu, Gour, Sudhir, and Shishir. One day, Ghanada came looking for a place to live in, just for two days, and occupied in the garret on the third-floor. Within a few moments of his arrival, Ghanada remarked – “I have been waiting for the Jerboa marked response.” And that single line spiked up the collective curiosity of the four residents of the mess. With the story about Jerboa, a specific kind of rat, found only in the deserts of Sahara, and with adventure tales from the forest reserves of Uganda, Ghanada mesmerized them. Navigating through the troubles of a Tycoon Tanner’s remarkable African safari was supposedly the source of happiness for this arid looking, tall, thin man standing in from of them.
He smoked, but did not carry any cigarettes on him. So, he nonchalantly started taking cigarettes from Shishir’s box. Though, he did say he was merely borrowing it and one day he would return each and every cigarette. When he spoke about the deep jungles of Africa, while puffing on those cigarettes, it revealed his grip of knowledge on history, geography and biology, the sharpness of his presence of mind, and his sense of composure in face of any danger to win the challenge. Needless to say, in no time all, the four residents had come under his spell.
Ghanada had arrived to live in the 72 no. house in Kolkata, to wait for a response over a certain Jerboa marked advertisement to appear in London Times. Once it appeared, he would again embark on a new adventure, to solve another one of the world’s mysteries. The rest is history.
The Insect
Something frightened Ghanada to such an extent that he left his room, screaming in fear. After the other boarders reached the room, they found a common variety of an insect dead under the bed. As the others started laughing, Ghanada came up with yet another story of his adventure, to justify his fear. He described how he had started his journey from Riga, the capital of Latvia, and then had traveled through the African forests in search of an insect, called Schistocerca gregaria.
The story is about two Jewish brothers General Vornoff and Jacob Rothstein who got separated and lived two very different lives. While Vornoff became a true Prussian to escape anti-Semitic oppression and Jacob remained a loyal Jew and was determined to take revenge. The former was Ghanada’s friend, whom he had met during one of his hunting expeditions. They had sailed hundreds of miles in the river Naipar, went to Congo, and lived among the Masais. This friend had asked Ghanada to stop his Jewish brother, Jacob, who was planning to destroy the civilization, by creating swarms of Schistocerca gregaria.
Ghanada had then traveled to the shores of the Bahr-al-Arab, home to the Dinkas, the tallest men on earth, and met Jacob and saved the world.
The Raft
Ghanada has an eternally inseparable relationship with the word ‘unbelievable’, so there’s no need to be surprised. But even so, it was incredible to see Ghanada holding a twenty-rupee note in his hand! And he didn’t just stop there. He asked Rambhuj to buy biryani-pilau, and prawn malai-curry with those twenty rupees! On top of it, Ghanada also asked him to make arrangements for vermicelli pudding with pistachio, cashew and raisin, and gave him another twenty-rupee note! And no, he still didn’t stop there. From his other pocket, Ghanada brought out a new box of cigarettes too!
The reason behind his royal generosity was equally unbelievable. Hurtado Carlos had sent him a letter. Since it was difficult to exchange Brazilian currency in Kolkata, the money had arrived converted into Indian rupees. One might wonder why someone would go into so much trouble to send just fifty rupees. But no, receiving fifty rupees from a penny-pinching fellow like Hurtado was a big deal in itself.
As one would expect, next came a breathtaking story of Ghanada and Hurtado, surviving a ghastly storm, in the middle of the boundless South Atlantic Ocean, holding onto an inverted raft, jangada. Ghanada had taken out a magic pill from his hat and put it into Hurtado’s mouth to keep him alive. Fifty miles away from Brazil’s Cabedelo port, an auction had been organized on a small island and that was the reason Ghanada had to face such — grave danger. Hurtado and his cousin de Díos had got into a brawl because of that auction. And it was obvious that Ghanada had won the fight. Moreover, he had turned such a massive marine adventure into a great victory, with the help of just one single raft! Nah, only Ghanada could make such an impossibly unbelievable victory possible.
The Stone
Ghanada is furious. Bonowari has thrown away a chunk of glass, thinking it was a piece of a broken glass paperweight. But, according to Ghanada, it was something invaluable. It was a piece of Tektite.
On his way to conquer Asia, Sikandar Shah had destroyed and looted Halicarnassus. A city called Petronium had been built on those ruins. Later, in its usage by Turks, the name ‘Petronium’ became ‘Bodrum’. Ghanada had gone to Bodrum and was living there, under the pretense of doing business of lifting sponges from the sea. He had appointed Uncle Kapkin in his hired boat, to do the job of lifting the sponge. However, Ghanada hadn’t wanted any common sponge; he had needed the real Spongia Officinalis Mollissima, commonly known as a special Turkey cup. Even after two weeks, they hadn’t found any such sponge. Uncle Kapkin had then shared a secret with him. He said, under the sea, he had seen the artifacts of Harappa, Mohenjo-Daro civilizations, and some people were after him to know the location of that hidden treasure, but he hadn’t wished to share it with anyone else. Kapkin had then taken Ghanada to the location and they had planned to go in under the sea the next morning, but during the night, their aqualungs got stolen from their boat and they had to return to Bodrum.
Upon returning to Bodrum, they saw that the fancy ship of Mr. Savage was anchored at the port. Kapkin explained to Ghanada that Mr. Savage was the same person who had wanted to know the location of those artifacts.
After Mr. Savage attacked Uncle Kapkin and sent him to the hospital, Ghanada was infuriated and had gone to Mr. Savage’s ship. After a physical confrontation with Savage’s henchmen, Ghanada had reached Savage himself. Ghanada had demanded that he hand over the artifacts that he had collected from under the sea. Savage had denied knowing about the existence of any such artifacts, and had asked Ghanada to take anything he wanted, from the room. Ghanada had taken the invaluable Tektite and said he would return it only if Savage sent him those artifacts.
After Ghanada finishes telling this story, Bonowari comes back with the lost Tektite that he found on the road, but Ghanada throws it away in disgust.

The Song
All the members of the mess-bari have received some cards with threat messages! They showed the card to Ghanada and explained why they should take these messages seriously and leave the house, at once, to avoid a grave danger.
All of this was a meticulous plan, drawn by the other members, to convince Ghanada to move out of the house, so that renovation works could be done. To make the situation scarier, they have also arranged for midnight knocks on the door, in the middle of the night. Initially, the plan worked, and Ghanada agreed to go to Diamond Harbor and spend some time there. But, to their utter surprise, the morning they were supposed to leave, they found Ghanada sitting in his room, not showing any intention to pack his stuff. When asked, Ghanada replied that he had handed over the songs to the concerned person, and thus, there was no longer any need to go anywhere. Then, Ghanada tells the story of Matsuo and Yamado, who were the owners of two tiny, Pacific islands, Limu and Nifa, respectively. Matsuo’s Limu Island had got destroyed, and Matsuo had initially blamed Ghanada for this. Ghanada had explained to Matsuo that he himself had invited the destruction of his island, by bringing in ‘Bufo Marinus’ to kill beetles in his farms.
Ghanada told the other boarders, the day before, he had met Matsuo, in Kolkata, and he had asked Ghanada for help to get rid of the Bufo Marinus, and that it was Matsuo who has been sending all those cards, to get Ghanada’s attention. Ghanada further explained that he had imitated and recorded the song of that particular toad, called Bufo Marinus, and that would do the work for Matsuo. And thus, Ghanada declared, there was no need to be scared anymore, and that they could again live peacefully in the house.
After hearing the story, when Shibu, Shishir, Gour, and Sudhir went out for a walk, on their way, they met the boy whom they had appointed to knock on the door at midnight. The boy said that the day before, he met Ghanada, and that he, Ghanada, had told him there was no need to knock on the door, anymore.
The Measurement
What a mess! Ghanada wanted to build another window in his room. But the owner of the mess-bari (boarding house) didn’t agree. Moreover, there was not enough space on the south side. When asked about the rational for an additional window, Ghanada provided the list of daily-usage items that have been disappearing from his room. Even though we did not understand the connection between the need for an additional window and the many things that were disappearing from the room, to keep him happy, we simply started to collect the lost items. It’s no joke to find everything in its same size and measurement as the original item!
But those amongst us, who were his admirers, didn’t give up so easily. Even though not all the items were in the exact measurements, we offered multiple accounts on why the latest items were better than the last ones. But that day Ghanada’s mood was more bitter than usual. We couldn’t even lure him with the offer of yummy food! The situation worsened further, because of the size of the ear pick. With an over-smart demeanor, Gour passed a remark about the ideal size of an ear pick – eight point seventy nine.
While scratching earwax with the ear pick, Ghanada said the ear pick was more than seventy three waves. Ghanada’s started to explain seventy three waves. Since 1960, we do not measure lengths marked by two precise marks on a Platinum-Iridium bar located near Paris any more. The new system to measure lengths is done with the wavelength of the rare gas, Krypton – 86. One meter is exactly 1,650,763.73 waves. And the ear pick we bought for him was seventy three waves longer than his old one.
The Spinning Top
Ghanada is not ready to board a plane. Is he afraid of boarding a plane? No, of course not! He doesn’t want to travel by a plane because, once, he had flown aboard a ‘spinning top’, which had looked like a flattened disc. Ghanada narrates the story of a Dakota plane that was flying from England to America, and had disappeared in the sky.
At the time when this incident took place, Ghanada was in England and was visiting his old pal, Croydon Police Chief, Mr. Donought. Ghanada was requested by Mr. Donought to help him in solving a mystery. While flying in a supersonic jet bomber, Ghanada got to know all the details about the renowned spy, Gallico, from Mr. Donought. Thus, Ghanada wanted to visit Labrador to solve the mystery.
Hiring a plane, they had reached Battle Harbor in Labrador and from there they had sailed across the Hamilton River, towards Dyke Lake and then walked for five days to find Gallico. Gallico, having mysteriously shown up in the middle of the night, had then handed over the confidential file that had gone missing. He also showed them the place where all the disappeared planes had landed and got destroyed. There, they had found a disc-like machine, floating on the Dyke Lake. Gallico had explained that creatures from some other planet were using this type of machine to come to that place, to collect their research materials. They were responsible for destroying the planes. Ghanada had then entered the machine and after pressing some buttons, the spinning top-like machine had started moving up in the sky. Suddenly, some similar disc-like machines had appeared and surrounded them. After traveling in the sky for quite a while, it had landed in the sea and Ghanada had lost — consciousness.
Ever since this incident happened, Ghanada doesn’t like to take a flight.
The Threads
After the other residents of the boarding house revealed a fib of Ghanada, he stopped interacting with anyone in the house. After trying for days to make him talk, they made up a story of receiving an insured mail which Shishir had sent back ‘by mistake’. The plan worked as Ghanada started narrating a story about traveling to Mato Grosso, in Brazil.
Ghanada said he knew that the mail had been sent by Don Benito, from the city of Cusco, in Peru and that it contained some pieces of threads. Then, he went on to explain the story of those threads. Ghanada, along with four others, had gone to Mato Grosso, in search of the most mysterious tribe in the world, named Xavante. Xavantes use a baton to kill people. No one could return alive after meeting them. Two years ago, Senor Berian had disappeared in that region. Don Benito had gone to find him, but he too went missing. Ghanada had set up a camp inside the jungle. During the night, Ghanada and his companions could hear the noise of different birds and animals. This was a typical trick of the Xavantes. But Ghanada identified a particular sound that belonged to an animal unfamiliar in that region. Thus, he figured out that there was something strange and followed the noise.
He found a tent in the middle of the jungle. Ghanada tricked the owner of the tent to come out and he himself entered the tent stealthily. Then, within a short time, he examined everything and confirmed that it was Benito who was living in that tent. After Benito entered, Ghanada explained everything and showed him the colored threads – Quipu. These Quipus contained the information of the hidden treasure of Inca civilization. Senor Berian had found those Quipus and before he died, he had given them to Benito, so that he could hand them to the government. But Benito, in an expectation to unearth the treasure, had kept it with himself. However, he didn’t know how to decode those Quipus. After a little tussle, Ghanada took back the Quipus and wanted to take them with him. Benito requested to give him two years and promised that if he couldn’t decode it within this time, he would send the threads to Ghanada.
As two years had passed, he had kept his promise and sent those colored threads to Ghanada.
Teeth
Ghanada wears dentures, a fact that had been unknown to the other boarders, till now. Ghanada then explains how he had saved the world by extracting a couple of his healthy teeth and replacing it with dentures.
The story is set in the city of Avalon, in California. Ghanada had been invited to that city by his old friend, D’Costa, via a coded telegram. However, on reaching Avalon, Ghanada found out that D’Costa had died a day before, by drowning in the sea. At that time, an elusive tuna fish, which Ghanada had named Nilima, was the only topic of discussion in Avalon. All the Tuna fish hunters had failed to catch Nilima. Ghanada had failed too. After trying for a few days, Ghanada gave up and went to New Port city, in the mainland of California. Upon returning to Avalon, he met Benito, the richest member of the local Tuna club. Soon, Ghanada received an invitation from Benito to attend a party on Benito’s cruise boat. Before going to the party, Ghanada went into the sea, wearing a Scuba costume and solved the mystery of Nilima not being caught, as well as the mystery of D’Costa’s death. However, the last piece of the puzzle was still missing.
Ghanada went to the cruise party and there, he confronted Benito and accused him of killing D’Costa, following which, they got into a fight. Then it was revealed that Benito had imprisoned a renowned scientist, Anthony Fisher, forced him to develop a projectile weapon, and had made him write down the formula of the cobalt bomb. Ghanada freed Mr. Fisher, took photographs of the formula with the cameras that he had hidden in his dentures, and sent those via a torpedo, developed by Benito, with the help of Mr. Fisher.
Water
No one can predict when and why Ghanada would be in a mood to share a story. Ghanada was mad at the other boarders and hence, was not talking to anyone for days. Meanwhile, Gour has lost his raincoat in the stadium. While all of them were discussing a way to find it out, suddenly, to all of their surprise, Ghanada intervened. Picking up the word ‘lost’, he started telling a story about the experience he had had, in Johannesburg.
On behalf of an American newspaper, he had traveled to Port Elizabeth, Durban, Kimberley, and Pretoria, and finally reached Johannesburg. There, he had seen a strange advertisement in a local newspaper, stating.
“WANTED – a kind of dried up, shrunken Black menial, who can survive seven days without water. If any contractor can bring someone like that, he will be rewarded.”
Ghanada had wanted to find out the truth behind this advertisement and went to the tobacco company’s office, mentioned in the advertisement. There, he had managed to impress Mr. Fink and bagged the job.
Then, he had accompanied Mr. Fink to the Kalahari Desert. After traveling for days, Mr. Fink had ordered him to go to Keetmanshoop and steal a pair of Karakul lambs. It was a journey of five days, without water. Of course, Ghanada had his own way to make it. He did the job and came back within ten days. But, instead of rewarding him, Fink had tried to bury him alive. Ghanada had already thrown away all the water that Fink had stored in his car, and told him that if Fink killed him, there was no way Fink could return to the city, alone. After some altercation, Ghanada had then tied him up and went to sleep. The next morning, Ghanada had woken up to find that Fink already left the place, with the lambs. But, Ghanada knew he would never be able to make it to the city; as Ghanada had disintegrated his compass, he would land up in Keetmanshoop, and there, he would be arrested along with the lambs.
Thorn
Ghanada has been regularly marking the house rental advertisements in the newspaper, to suggest that he would leave the mess-bari soon. The decision came after Shibu had offered him a fish fillet without too many bones, while all the other boarders were having tasty fish, called Koi, which happened to be more expensive. As per Shibu, he had taken this decision, because Ghanada cannot manage to eat fish with too many bones. But, Ghanada had taken it in a wrong way. Why less expensive fish for him? To patch up the situation, since that incident, Ghanada has been served with delicious food from famous restaurants in Kolkata, every day. But, Ghanada is still mad. He won’t leave his room and has started looking into moving out of the mess-bari.
Even after trying to talk to Ghanada about his intention to leave the mess-bari, when the others didn’t get any response, they decided to mark the ads too, and via Rambhuj, they sent the message that they also wanted to leave the mess-bari.
This trick seemed to work, as it generated some response. Ghanada drafted a cablegram and asked Rambhuj to send it. Rambhuj, not having any clue about the process of sending cablegrams, came to the other boarders with the draft. The draft stated that Ghanada was accepting an invitation to save the Pacific Ocean.
As the others rushed to his room, Ghanada explained how he had saved the Pacific Ocean, with the help of the bones of Acanthaster planci, also known as Crown-of-thorns starfish, which has a central disk and 23 radiating arms and venomous thorn-like spines that cover its upper surface
Soil
Gour introduces Shibu’s maternal cousin, Shambhu, to Ghanada. Shambu is here to offer him Ghee, produced in Shambhu’s own dairy, which is located near NEFA. As Ghanada becomes curious, Shibu explains that Shambhu doesn’t have a dairy, but is planning to set one up. Shibu and Shambhu then go on to say how affordable the place is and how easy it is to set up a diary there. During the discussion, Shambhu remarks, how would Ghanada know anything about the quality of the soil in NEFA, as Ghanada’s world is restricted to Bonomali Naskar Lane?
In response to this insult, Ghanada tells a story of him visiting Nigeria, where the tribal communities were fighting each other on the evil counsel of some greedy White men, whose hearts burn at the thought of Black empowerment. Ghanada explains how, by seeing some soil in the hooves of a dead Kudu, he saved a Black man from getting exploited by a greedy White.
Dance
A telegram arrived at the 72 Bonomali Nashkar Lane, addressed to Ganosha Mados. The other boarders opened the envelope with excitement, only to realize it was for none other than Ghanada a.k.a. Ghanashyam Das. The content of the telegram was something weird, though. After much thought and debate, they reached the conclusion that the telegram was sent by Shibu’s maternal cousin, who was once harassed by Ghanada.
Reading the letter, Ghanada seemed quite pleased and said it was from Ahara, whom he knew from his trip to Bolivia. While traveling in the third class compartment of an antiquated train, from Santa Cruz to Puerto Suarez, Ghanada had met Ignacio. Ignacio had told him that he was traveling with his friend, Ahara, who would buy a title deed of an old tin mine that Ignacio’s family possessed.
As Ghanada met Ahara, the latter proposed a weird challenge. To dig into the matter, curious Ghanada had accepted the challenge, and after reaching Puerto Suarez, Ahara had taken him to an unknown place, inside a dense forest and had left him there, with his hands and legs tied with a rope. The condition of the challenge was that Ghanada had to get out of the forest and find a way to the nearest town, within the next seven days. Ahara would wait in his helicopter in a nearby place, and after seven days, he would take Ghanada back to Puerto Suarez. But, Ahara ditched him at the very outset and had left the spot immediately.
After realizing that he had been betrayed, Ghanada didn’t waste any time, and instead of seven, it took him only two days to reach the nearest town. Ahara was, of course, not happy to see him there and denied giving him the prize money for winning the challenge. After applying some tricks of Karate on Ahara, Ghanada had then demanded to see the deed of the mine. Ahara had then agreed to give the proper price for the mine, which he otherwise would have taken over at an extremely low price.
Ghanada then explained to the members of the mess-bari how he had found his way to the nearest town, by following the lead suggested by the dance movements of bees.
According to Ghanada, Ahara was still confused about the whole incident and so, he is trying to fool around. Deciphering the pattern code of the telegram, Ghanada said Ahara would be waiting in a nearby marketplace, on the said date. When the others reached the place on that day, they found Raha was indeed waiting there. But no one had the answer to how Ghanada could identify the spot, from the gibberish drawing made by Raha.
Dust
Ghanada was on the lookout for some Flora or Dora. Who knew even Ghanada would look for a girl!? But no, we got to know the real story later on. ‘Flora’ and ‘Dora’ were, in fact, the names of famous storms. One single Flora had finished seven thousand one hundred ninety three people. In fact, there were more of her kinds. Flora, Hilda, Hazel, Donna, Cleo, Audrey – they came with hundreds of names, all packed with hundreds of blows. But why Ghanada got so worked up with those dangerous Flora and Dora? Ah! After all, who else is there in the whole universe to tackle these tempests, except him?
And Ghanada did manage to tackle them, quite easily. Of course, we already knew he could do so, but, the way he did it was weird and wonderful. He dealt with the tempest with dust. Yes, simple dust.
He was then living in a sloop, in Bell Island, with a friend named Curry. In search of a five-faced conch, they broke through the ocean. It was then that the tempest, Lora, started waking up in the province. Curry was scared to death, but our brave-heart Ghanada filled his harpoon with a dust cannonball and geared up for the fight. When Lora strengthened up, Ghanada aimed his harpoon and hurled his dust cannonball at her. Instantly, Lora was done. What was in that dust? Well, silver iodide. Really, it’s impossible to contest Ghanada.
Mud
Along with the other clothes, Bonowari had sent a fatua to the local dry-cleaning store. He hadn’t realized it belonged to Ghanada. Ghanada became furious as soon as he found out that his fatua was at the dry cleaners’. In an attempt to calm him down, Gour told him it was good that Bonowari sent it to the dry cleaners’, as it was dirty. The mention of the word ‘dirty’ irked Ghanada to no end, and as a result, he boycotted the boat party, which had been planned weeks ago. Since then, he hadn’t interacted with anyone in the house, except for Bonowari and Rambhuj. The others made hundreds of plans to pay him back in his own coin, but, could not come up with a solid one. Then the opportunity came, during a power outage. Scared in the dark, Ghanada himself came down to the hangout room downstairs and started telling them a story, explaining why he thinks that a little bit of mud on the clothes is so valuable.
The story takes us to Mato Grosso, in Brazil. Ghanada’s friend, Belmanto, had bought a ranch in that area, and Ghanada was visiting him. Belmanto’s dream was to make his ranch the Numro Uno 1 in the whole world, where he would breed the best quality cattle and horses. After reaching the place, Ghanada had found his friend to be gravely distressed. Belmanto had then revealed that he was about to sell off the ranch, at a very low price and leave the area forever. It took Ghanada a while to understand what the matter was. Soon, he realized Belmanto was withdrawing because of the attack of swarms of mosquitoes. Immediately, Ghanada had found the solution, and had taken out his trousers from his travel bag. One of the trouser legs had a speck of mud on them, and that speck of mud did the trick. Before going to Mato Grosso, Ghanada had roamed around some flooded rivers, in Argentina. The strain of mud must have come from there, Ghanada guessed. That mud had the miniscule eggs of a specific kind of tiny fish, called Cynolebias belotti. Locally, it is known as the Pearlfish. Ghanada had sprinkled that dried mud powder in the dried-up canals and swamps near the ranch. During rainy season, the mud got wet, and within half an hour, several Pearlfish came out of the eggs. A single fish can destroy at least fifty mosquito larvae a day. At the age of three weeks, the female fish starts laying eggs. Each Pearlfish lays around three hundred eggs in a week. After the floodwater recedes, those eggs remain dormant, in the dried-up mud.
After this, Belmanto never had to worry about the mosquitoes, and now, he has the best ranch in the world.
Sticky Water
Civil war situation is prevailing in 72 Bonomali Naskar Lane. Half of its members want to take Ghanada to Darjeeling and the other half wants to take him to Digha. Both parties have made all the arrangements and are confident that Ghanada has agreed to go to the place of their preference. On the day of the journey, when they are just about to leave, to their utter surprise, they found Ghanada relaxing in his room, nonchalantly, without any preparation for the trip. Ghanada says that he cannot leave the town as he has to wait for a telegram.
Ghanada then explains that if the telegram arrives, he will have to find some water-like substance, which is very different from normal water. Then, he starts telling a story about his visit to New Guinea, traveling half of the world. All the while, he was being followed by a man, and at last, in a desert-like place, he had confronted the man who was following him; it was Captain Donut. After this, with the clue from Captain Donut, Ghanada had found a drop of the water-like substance, in a hidden valley of MacDonnell range in the barren, hilly area of central Australia. But, they had got hold of only one drop of it, and the actual offender had left by then. Ghanada expressed his concern, that if that absconding offender manages to collect another drop of it, it can destroy the whole world.
Ghanada explains the chemical composition and structure of this water-like substance that is 40 times heavier and ten times stickier than normal water and says how it can destroy the world. The water was developed by some Russian scientist, and then, some Australian scientists had created it in the laboratory. Ghanada explains, although there’s no threat from these scientists, the concern is, if some crooked scientists get hold of it, they can use it against humanity. Thus, Ghanada explains, he needs to remain alert and vigilant all time, and he has to wait for the telegram, which is why, it is not possible for him to leave the town at any cost.
Chaotic Halley
The residents of the boarding house are engaged in a heated argument about the possible movement of Halley’s Comet. All they want is to hear a tall tale story from Ghanada. After some deliberation on their part, Ghanada intervenes and starts telling the story. Ghanada explains how this time Halley’s Comet could behave differently, as the result of some human actions.
The calculator of the spaceship, Giotto, could make some mistake, and instead of observing the comet from a distance of thousands of kilometers, it might directly hit the comet’s head. If this happened, a brilliant television camera would come out from the comet. A camera that had been implanted on the comet has recorded its movement for seventy-six years.
But who had planted this camera? Men on earth didn’t, for sure. Ghanada suggests maybe some highly developed creatures live in the darkness of Nebula, but to know for sure, one needs to wait for the day of Halley’s next appearance in the sky.
The Brother
Smashing news! Ghanada has left the mess-bari (boarding house), with all his belongings. Why? Because it was too much for him to accept the audacity of people mistrusting the true story of him leaving his hat on top of Mt. Everest. Hence Ghanada vanished, all of a sudden. Soon after that, a new dada came to inhabit Ghanada’s same old room in the mess-bari. And then he revealed the bloodcurdling news – Ghanada will never come back! He had supposedly arrived on such a decision in Berlin. Post World War II, the streets of Berlin were brimming with devastation. Bombs and fusillade rained down like the fireworks on Kali Puja.
In the middle of all this, Ghanada had gone there to find out the pioneer of the electronic brain – Dr. Benner.
At the bottom of the creeks and ocean, they looked for him everywhere, with the help of various kinds of water transports. But, Dr. Benner was nowhere to be found. Then one day, they found him and thus his strange danger was revealed at last. Dr. Benner could no longer figure out whether he was controlling the machine or it was controlling him! The Electronic Brain he had built was now ready to answer every question, but on one condition. The questions had to keep coming, without a pause. And needless to say, it came up with an answer to every question in less than a second.
Finally, Ghanada’s sharp wit won the game; that too with one single, solid question. And the robot yielded. The question was – which came first, the seed or the plant? Only Ghanada could come up with this.
Ghanada Returned
Ghanada has gone missing! It was like a bolt from the blue! It’s true he did look unmindful for the last few days. Even Bonowari had noticed that when he went to serve him tea.
When everyone was stricken with anxiety over Ghanada, they were told that Rashid Khan – the shawl seller was downstairs, to meet them. After all, Ghanada had scores of devotees, all around the world. Once, when Rashid Khan had met him for the first time, he was mesmerized with Ghanada’s impeccable knowledge about shawls. So, getting rid of that fellow, they were quite late to reach Parashar Barma’s place, to ask about any trace of Ghanada’s whereabouts.
Parashar Barma, at that time, was busy in a poetry session with his friend, Krittibas Bhadra. Everyone had to keep waiting for the session to end while listening to samples of poetry. Out of boredom they even started to dissect the poetries to see if they could get any clue to find Ghanada. The days kept on passing, but there was no trace of him. They were getting bored to death. Then suddenly, one day, Ghanada returned.
But what was up with him? He was wearing Vidyasagar-style yellow sandals, white dhoti and kurta. On his shoulders hung a saffron colored chuddar and his head was covered in a saffron colored Gandhi cap. He ordered a long menu of food to Rambhuj, as soon as he arrived. Finally, it was revealed that for the last week, he was living in a hotel meant for hippies, searching for a mere magnet. That’s it. He started narrating the account of retrieving that magnet – the amazing story of defeating all the tricks of an enemy.
Not Eighteen - It was Nineteen
Gour is in charge of the evening snacks of the mess-bari. He has introduced a unique meal plan. Gour has decided to serve only a specific type of food, for at least a week. This week, he is only serving vegetable sandwiches. Ghanada, naturally disappointed with the menu, but without directly refusing it, takes a different course. While the others were discussing about how many soldiers had died in Kurukshetra, Ghanada intervenes. While it’s common knowledge that the battle of Kurukshetra was of eighteen days, according to Ghanada, the battle went on for nineteen days. Ghanada explains that the Pandavas, being the weaker force, had taken their position a day before, and this decision had helped them win the battle. The narrator of the story of Kurukshetra, Sanjaya, had missed this part, and thus, it is believed that the battle of Kurukshetra had gone on for only eighteen days.
After this great explanation, Gour can’t help but go to the local food joint, to bring chicken patties and fish rolls, to celebrate this momentous discovery of the actual duration of the battle of Kurukshetra.
Robinson Crusoe was a girl
No, there’s no need to be surprised. There’s also no point protesting about it. Because, doing so would interrupt the course of the highly spiced chat going on between four evening walkers, who had gathered around a lake, in South Calcutta. They were all familiar with Ghanashyam’s habit of sudden commentary of such absurd kind. Undoubtedly, one was bound to respect or agree to his boundless wisdom, which came out through his explanations of many strange topics. Although, he often filled the gaps of his wisdom with his oratory skills, there’s no doubt about it as well.
Now, he was set to explain the source of Daniel Defoe’s inspiration for writing Robinson Crusoe. Thus began the vivid description of how Defoe stumbled upon the information from ancient scripts, when he had visited Madrid, for business. Eventually, Marco Polo also appeared in the narration. It followed with the description of his days spent at the Genoa prison; then came up the topic of Rusticiano da Pisa. Spell bounded with Marco Polo’s stories, Pisa had noted down everything in French. And two hundred years later, Defoe came across those same notes and created the character of Robinson Crusoe. In the original manuscript, appeared the extremely beautiful princess, Nan Sung, of the Sung dynasty. The fate of Nan Sung was told in it and how the inapt blows of time made her become Robinson Crusoe.
Needless to say, it was impossible to rebuff Ghanashyam’s neat speechifying.
